    Description

We"re looking for an engineer to join our team building lightning-fast, frictionless checkout experiences for Amazon"s retail website. This is a great time to join: we are modernizing the Checkout platform and adding support for agentic purchasing flows that will change how hundreds of millions of customers complete their orders.

As a Software Development Engineer on the Checkout team within the Purchase Experience organization, you will design and deliver full-stack features across the entire software lifecycle using Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, and React. You will work on distributed systems at massive scale and plug generative AI into checkout infrastructure. If you like solving hard problems and shipping software that customers use every day, we"d love to hear from you.

    Key job responsibilities

    • Design and build full-stack features for the Checkout platform using Java, TypeScript, and React (Native and Web), covering the full software lifecycle from design through deployment and operations.
    • Own and improve distributed microservices that run frictionless, high-scale checkout experiences, keeping performance and maintainability in balance.
    • Plug generative AI frameworks into checkout workflows to support agentic purchasing flows for customers.
    • Work with product managers, UX designers, and engineers across 300+ teams to turn business and customer needs into reliable, well-documented solutions.
    • Coach fellow engineers through code reviews and technical guidance, helping maintain a high-quality codebase and spotting ways to improve team operations.

    A day in the life

You will start your day reviewing metrics and operational health for the services you own, then jump into building features that millions of customers will use at checkout. You might spend the morning pairing with a teammate on a system design for a new agentic purchase flow, then write and test code in the afternoon. You will work closely with product managers, UX designers and researchers, and business intelligence engineers to create the best purchase experiences for our customers.

    About the team

The Checkout team"s mission is to offer the most trusted and easy purchase experience on Earth. Collectively our team builds experiences that empower customers to collect and manage the items they intend to buy; provide the critical order details that enable them to make informed purchase decisions; surface contextual product and program-related benefits/recommendations to help them basket build and deepen their relationship with Amazon. We celebrate purchase completion while guiding them towards the next step of their shopping journey. Our team of builders owns the software, systems, and processes that enable 300+ teams at Amazon to innovate on behalf of our customers each year in the final stages of a customer's purchase journey. We are investing in modernizing our platform and launching agentic purchasing capabilities.

We care deeply about building an inclusive environment where everyone can be successful. We also invest in our people: you will get four weeks of innovation time per year to work on passion projects or build generative AI solutions, meeting-free Fridays for focused work, a monthly learning day to explore new skills, and two weeks per year dedicated to hackathons and group learning.

    About Company

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
