    Description

What if you could build intelligent systems that shape how millions of packages move through Amazon"s transportation network every day?

North American Sort Centers (NASC) are a critical part of Amazon"s Middle Mile transportation network, connecting fulfillment centers with the last-mile delivery network. NASC Tech is building the next generation of AI-powered planning and execution platforms that drive labor, capacity, and network connectivity decisions across hundreds of Sort Centers. We are looking for an experienced Software Development Engineer to help shape the technical direction of platforms that connect long-term strategic planning, mid-term optimization, and short-term operational execution into a unified ecosystem. Our vision is to move beyond disconnected planning tools and manual decision-making toward intelligent, event-driven systems where changes in network demand, capacity, or labor requirements can automatically trigger downstream model execution, planning adjustments, and operational actions. This is an opportunity to work at the intersection of distributed systems, Applied Science, and Agentic AI. You will design scalable model orchestration platforms, integrate ML models into production workflows, and build agentic systems that leverage LLMs, MCP, and tool-based integrations to connect data, and operational systems. As an SDE II in this team, you will own complex technical problems end-to-end, influence architecture and engineering decisions, and partner closely with Product, Applied Science, Data Engineering, and Operations teams across Amazon. If you enjoy building new systems, solving challenging engineering problems at scale, and turning emerging AI capabilities into practical solutions with measurable business impact, this role offers an opportunity to help define the future of Middle Mile planning technology.

    Key job responsibilities

The position focuses on building scalable planning and execution platforms across multiple planning horizons within Sort cneters. You will partner closely with Product, Science, Site Operations, and cross-organizational teams including AFT and Sort Tech to develop intelligent systems that connects planning systems and operational execution. This includes building agentic systems, model orchestration frameworks, and AI-powered automation to streamline complex workflows and enable data-driven decision-making.

    In addition, you will:

    • Design and build scalable distributed systems and full-stack applications that solve complex operational challenges at Amazon scale.
    • Architect and develop intelligent automation solutions that integrate AI capabilities, science models, and enterprise systems.
    • Build reliable platforms for executing, orchestrating, and monitoring ML and optimization models in production.
    • Lead end-to-end technical design and delivery, translating broadly defined business problems into scalable, extensible solutions.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to influence architectural decisions and drive innovation.
    • Drive engineering best practices, ensuring high standards for software quality, scalability, reliability, and operational excellence.
    • Mentor engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and knowledge sharing while contributing to the team"s technical direction.
    • Work in an agile environment to deliver high-quality software with strong end-to-end ownership.

    A day in the life

As an engineer on our team, your day could involve designing an event-driven workflow that automatically re-evaluates labor and capacity plans when network demand changes, building agents that connects planning data with ML models to generate actionable recommendations, or scaling distributed orchestration platforms that executes hundreds of optimization and simulation workflows across the Sort Center network. You will work closely with Scientists to host new models, collaborate with Product and Operations teams to understand real-world planning challenges, and partner with engineers across Amazon to integrate systems that have traditionally operated independently. Some days will focus on architecture and technical design, while others will involve hands-on development, experimentation with emerging AI technologies, reviewing code, or improving the reliability and performance of production systems. You will have the autonomy to influence technical decisions, take ownership of meaningful projects, and see your work translate directly into operational improvements across Amazon"s Middle Mile network. Our environment encourages engineers to experiment, challenge existing approaches, and build solutions that balance innovation with operational excellence.

    About the team

Out team builds and operates platforms that power planning and operational decision-making across Amazon"s Sort Center network. This charter spans long-term strategic planning, mid-term optimization, and short-term execution, connecting science-driven recommendations with systems that turn plans into operational actions. The engineering ecosystem includes full-stack applications, distributed model execution platforms, data processing pipelines, and decision automation services, built on AWS technologies including ECS, AWS Batch, SageMaker, Lambda, Step Functions, Aurora DB and DynamoDB. We are evolving these platforms into an intelligent, connected ecosystem through event-driven orchestration and agentic systems. Our teams collaborate to integrate AI agents, APIs, knowledge bases, and data tools on a shared AI infrastructure backbone, enabling intelligent automation, actionable insights, and seamless workflows across organizational boundaries. With a rapidly expanding charter spanning planning, execution, and AI-powered automation, this is an opportunity to build new capabilities from the ground up, shape foundational architectures, and influence how Amazon"s Middle Mile operates at scale.

    About Company

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
