    Description

    Position Summary

We are seeking a highly technical Software Architect to help design and build a new generation of modern, scalable software products. This is a hands-on architecture role with an approximately 50/50 split between solution architecture and software development.

The Software Architect will work closely with engineering teams, product stakeholders, and subject matter experts to understand complex business domains and translate them into scalable technical solutions. Responsibilities will span domain modeling, application and API architecture, technical documentation, software development, automated testing, and architectural decision-making throughout the development lifecycle.

This role is ideal for an architect who enjoys remaining close to the code and actively participating in the implementation of the solutions they design.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Lead technical discovery sessions with business stakeholders, domain experts, product teams, and engineers to understand complex requirements and business processes.

    • Translate business concepts and domain requirements into scalable, secure, high-performing, and maintainable application architectures.

    • Develop and maintain domain models that clearly represent business concepts, relationships, workflows, and system boundaries.

    • Design application architecture across APIs, backend services, data layers, integrations, and supporting components.

    • Design and document APIs used to integrate applications and services across independent systems and business domains.

    • Create and maintain API specifications, solution architecture documentation, technical diagrams, and architectural decision records.

    • Remain hands-on with the codebase, contributing production-quality application code, automation, prototypes, and engineering tools.

    • Spend approximately 50% of the role on hands-on software development and 50% on architecture and solution design.

    • Partner directly with software engineers throughout implementation to ensure architectural designs translate effectively into working software.

    • Participate in technical discovery and continuously evolve architecture as requirements and product understanding mature.

    • Evaluate architectural tradeoffs involving scalability, caching, performance, security, maintainability, and reliability.

    • Establish and promote modern software engineering practices, including Test-Driven Development (TDD), automated quality gates, and Continuous Delivery.

    • Contribute to architectural standards, development practices, reusable patterns, and engineering guidelines.

    • Work effectively within Agile product development teams operating in a fast-paced, iterative environment.

    • Communicate complex technical concepts through diagrams, documentation, and discussions with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

    Required Qualifications

    • Significant professional experience in software engineering, application architecture, or solution architecture.

    • Strong recent experience developing production software; candidates should be comfortable actively contributing code rather than operating solely in an architecture or advisory capacity.

    • Hands-on development experience with Node.js, Java, or comparable modern backend technologies.

    • Previous experience as an API, backend, or full-stack software engineer.

    • Demonstrated experience designing APIs and integrations between systems with distinct application or business domains.

    • Strong understanding of API design, distributed systems, application architecture, and domain modeling.

    • Experience designing applications for scalability, performance, security, reliability, and maintainability.

    • Strong experience with Test-Driven Development (TDD) and automated software testing.

    • Experience working within mature CI/CD and automated deployment environments.

    • Experience with technologies such as Docker, Jenkins, or comparable containerization and CI/CD platforms.

    • Ability to translate complex systems and application designs into clear technical diagrams using UML or similar modeling approaches.

    • Experience with architecture and collaboration tools such as Enterprise Architect, Mural, Lucidchart, Visio, or comparable platforms.

    • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to facilitate discussions between engineering teams and domain experts.

    • Ability to manage multiple technical priorities within a fast-paced development environment.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with modern JavaScript-based application stacks such as MongoDB, Express, React, and Node.js (MERN).

    • Experience with GraphQL and modern API architectures.

    • Experience with distributed SQL or other modern cloud-native database technologies.

    • Experience with microservices and service-oriented architectures.

    • Experience working in highly automated Continuous Delivery environments.

    • Experience with regulated, security-sensitive, or high-volume transactional applications.

    • Familiarity with SOX controls, cybersecurity requirements, financial systems, or e-commerce platforms.

    • Experience defining technical standards or providing architectural leadership across multiple development teams.

    Education

    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Engineering, or a related technical discipline preferred.

    • Equivalent professional software engineering and architecture experience will also be considered.

    Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is a software engineer first and architect second—someone capable of defining the architecture for a complex application and then sitting alongside the engineering team to help build it.

This person should be comfortable moving between whiteboarding a domain model or API architecture and writing production code, automated tests, or supporting development tools. They should be able to challenge technical assumptions, evaluate tradeoffs, and help engineering teams make pragmatic architectural decisions without introducing unnecessary complexity.
