Position Summary

Flexible work arrangements, including virtual/hybrid work locations, are an integral part of the School of Medicine's Working Forward initiative. As such, this position's work location is designated as hybrid. Please note that the designated work location is subject to change based on the unit's business needs. This is position is based in Chapel Hill, NC, with a combination of on-site and remote work, including occasional statewide travel for trainings and stakeholder meetings as assigned.

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine is seeking a full-time Social Work Practitioner to join the North Carolina Psychiatry Access Line (NC-PAL) team, supporting the new Adult Substance Use and Mental Health consultation line in the role of Behavioral Health Consultant. NC-PAL and NC MATTERS are sister programs that enhance care for children, adolescents, and perinatal patients with behavioral health needs in primary care settings through provider education, capacity building, and care coordination support.

The NC-PAL Behavioral Health Consultant serves as a frontline clinical resource for health care professionals statewide by providing care coordination, referral support, resource consultation, and technical assistance. This position also supports provider education, outreach, stakeholder engagement, and the development of behavioral health resource materials. Through these activities, the NC-PAL Behavioral Health Consultant plays a key role in expanding access to high-quality behavioral health care for adults across North Carolina while strengthening the capacity of the health care workforce.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Provide frontline coverage of the NC-PAL Adult Line, providing personalized linkage and referral support via telephone and secure messaging to health care providers who call for clinical consultation, and care management services to link clients to services as needed.
• Triage calls to addiction and psychiatry specialists for higher level consultation requests as requested; manage and coordinate real-time clinical consultation with additional specialists as needed.
• Communicate with all parties following a consultation to ensure feedback loop for families engaged in care coordination services; ensure all follow-up and outcome documentation is completed for all cases.
• Assess participating clinics for technical assistance or regional resource connection needs and coordinate linkages as needed.
• Monitor, vet, and curate appropriate resources to bolster NC-PAL's resource database. Maintain contact with community linkages and referral partners to ensure pathways to care for patients are clear and accessible.
• Participate in health care provider outreach and engagement efforts as assigned by the Leadership Team.
• Develop and foster relationships with managed care organizations and/or MH/SUD care delivery agencies across the state to build partnerships and to build awareness of NC-PAL Adult and partner organizations.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a Human Services discipline with coursework related to the area of assignment. Some positions may require certification to practice as a certified or licensed Clinical Social Worker as required by the North Carolina Social Work Certification Board.

Management Preferences

• Experience providing consultation, care coordination, or support to health care providers (e.g., psychiatry access programs, integrated care settings).
• Familiarity with Medication for Addiction Treatment (MAT), including methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly in documentation, resource management, and follow-up.
• Comfort using virtual platforms and technology for consultation, training, and collaboration.
• Familiarity with evidence-informed practices such as trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, SBIRT, and/or behavioral health integration in primary care.
