Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

For more than fifty years UNC's Department of American Studies has explored US American culture from local, regional, national, and global perspectives. We are committed to interdisciplinary approaches that place American institutions as well as the histories, cultures, and contemporary experiences of American people at the center of academic study. Graduates of our department build careers in public history, arts, museums, and non-profits in addition to law, health, and business. The department serves as the home for undergraduate and graduate program in American Indian and Indigenous studies and a doctoral program in folklore.

Position Summary

The Project Manager will oversee the planning, coordination, and execution of a grant-funded oral history project in partnership with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund (LDF). Reporting to the Lead Principal Investigator, this position is responsible for managing all phases of the project, including coordinating interviews with LDF veterans, scheduling travel, recruiting and processing independent contractors, maintaining communication with the project sponsor, managing invoices and reimbursements, overseeing the transfer of digital materials, and coordinating transcript creation, review, and revisions.

This role serves as the primary point of coordination among internal and external stakeholders, ensuring project activities are completed on time and in accordance with project goals. The Project Manager will develop and implement work plans, coordinate multiple concurrent activities, assess project needs and resources, recommend process improvements, assign and review work, and collaborate with project partners to meet established objectives and deadlines while preserving the historical legacy of LDF's civil rights advocacy.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the field assigned and one year of related training or experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Management Preferences

Demonstrated experience planning, coordinating, or conducting oral history research projects. Proven experience managing complex research projects involving multiple participants, stakeholders, or project activities.

Strong interpersonal or collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in team environments by engaging successfully with colleagues, partners, or communities from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Resourceful problem-solving skills, with the ability to anticipate or overcome challenges with effective solutions.

Proficiency with statistical analysis software, including Stata, SPSS, or similar applications.
