Pediatric X-Ray Tech

Days

Monday - Friday: 8am - 4:30pm; on call/callback/holidays per unit needs
ON CALL: 2-3 call shifts per month

Key Responsibilities:

• Verify patient identity using appropriate patient identifiers and review physician orders before initiating X-ray examinations.
• Perform diagnostic radiographic examinations of bones, tissues, and organs according to physician orders and established departmental protocols.
• Explain X-ray procedures to patients, answer questions, and provide clear instructions to promote cooperation and reduce anxiety.
• Properly position patients for radiographic examinations, including safely lifting, transferring, and repositioning patients with limited mobility.
• Operate all radiologic equipment safely and correctly while maintaining radiation exposure As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA).
• Assess each patient's condition and age-specific needs and modify the approach to imaging procedures when appropriate.
• Produce high-quality, diagnostic images suitable for interpretation by the Radiologist.
• Review images for positioning, exposure, artifacts, and diagnostic quality before completing the examination.
• Promptly report damaged, malfunctioning, or unsafe X-ray equipment to management and follow appropriate procedures for equipment concerns.
• Utilize electronic patient information systems to verify patient name, date of birth, examination ordered, and provider comments or special exam instructions.
• Follow the dual-patient-identifier procedure consistently to promote patient safety and prevent wrong-patient/wrong-exam errors.
• Maintain accurate patient records and ensure radiographic images are correctly identified and transmitted to the PACS system.
• Follow radiation-safety, infection-control, patient-safety, and departmental policies and procedures.
• Provide compassionate, age-appropriate care to pediatric, adult, and critically ill patients.
• Work effectively with Radiologists, physicians, nurses, technologists, and other healthcare professionals in a Level I Trauma Center environment.
• Respond to urgent and emergent imaging requests while maintaining accuracy, efficiency, and patient safety.
• Participate in on-call coverage and maintain the ability to report within 30 minutes when called in for an on-call shift.

Pediatric & Specialized Imaging Requirements

• Demonstrate at least 1 year of experience working in a children's hospital.
• Demonstrate familiarity with pediatric radiographic examinations and age-specific patient-care techniques.
• Demonstrate familiarity with pediatric fluoroscopy examinations, including:
  • Upper GI (UGI)
  • VCUG
  • Barium Enema
  • Other pediatric fluoroscopic procedures
• Demonstrate familiarity with NICU portable radiography, including performing bedside imaging on critically ill neonates.
• Safely position and image pediatric and neonatal patients while minimizing radiation exposure.
• Adapt imaging techniques to the patient's age, size, condition, and ability to cooperate.

Required Qualifications

• Completion of formal training from an approved School of Radiologic Technology.
• Current ARRT certification.
• Current New York State Radiologic Technologist License, or ability to obtain the NYS license prior to start.
• Minimum 2 years of X-Ray Technologist experience.
• Minimum 1 year of Children's Hospital experience.
• Minimum 1 year of Level I Trauma Center experience.
• BLS certification required.
• Pediatric fluoroscopy experience/familiarity, including UGI, VCUG, and Barium Enema.
• NICU portable X-ray experience/familiarity.
• Ability to safely lift, move, and transfer patients.
• Ability to stand and remain physically active for extended periods.
• Ability to respond to an on-call assignment within 30 minutes.
