    Sleep Technologist

    Job Summary

    The Sleep Technologist is responsible for conducting sleep studies and monitoring patients to evaluate and diagnose sleep-related disorders. The role includes preparing patients for testing, applying monitoring equipment, collecting physiological data, and assisting physicians in the assessment of sleep conditions such as sleep apnea, insomnia, and other sleep disorders.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Perform overnight and daytime sleep studies, including polysomnography.

    • Prepare patients for sleep testing and explain procedures clearly.

    • Apply electrodes, sensors, respiratory belts, pulse oximeters, and other monitoring equipment.

    • Monitor EEG, EKG, respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, airflow, muscle activity, and other physiological signals.

    • Identify and document sleep stages, respiratory events, cardiac abnormalities, limb movements, and other relevant findings.

    • Perform CPAP, BiPAP, and other positive airway pressure titration studies as ordered.

    • Monitor patients throughout sleep studies and respond appropriately to clinical or technical issues.

    • Score sleep studies according to established guidelines and facility protocols.

    • Maintain accurate patient records and enter testing information into the EMR/EHR system.

    • Prepare preliminary reports and provide collected data to sleep physicians for interpretation.

    • Clean, disinfect, and maintain sleep laboratory equipment.

    • Troubleshoot technical issues with sleep monitoring equipment.

    • Follow infection-control, patient-safety, HIPAA, and facility policies.

    • Maintain adequate supplies required for sleep studies.

    • Assist with home sleep apnea testing when required.

    Qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent required.

    • Associate degree or completion of an accredited sleep technology, respiratory therapy, or related healthcare program preferred.

    • Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) certification preferred or required depending on employer.

    • Certified Polysomnographic Technician (CPSGT) or equivalent certification may be accepted.

    • BLS/CPR certification required or preferred.

    • Previous experience in a sleep laboratory, respiratory care, neurology, or cardiology environment is preferred.

    Required Skills

    • Knowledge of polysomnography and sleep disorder testing procedures.

    • Understanding of sleep stages and sleep-related respiratory disorders.

    • Experience with CPAP and BiPAP titration.

    • Knowledge of EEG, EKG, oxygen saturation, airflow, and respiratory monitoring.

    • Ability to recognize abnormal physiological findings and notify appropriate clinical personnel.

    • Strong attention to detail and documentation skills.

    • Ability to troubleshoot sleep diagnostic equipment.

    • Good interpersonal and patient-care skills.

    • Ability to work independently during overnight shifts.

    • Basic computer and electronic medical record skills.

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.

    • Ability to assist patients with positioning and mobility when necessary.

    • Ability to lift or move medical equipment and supplies.

    • Ability to remain alert and attentive during overnight monitoring.

    Work Environment

    Sleep Technologists typically work in hospitals, sleep laboratories, diagnostic centers, neurology departments, pulmonary clinics, or specialty sleep centers. The position commonly requires overnight, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.
