A day in the life

It’s 7:30 a.m. on the production floor of a high‑volume plastics facility. You’ve just reviewed overnight near‑miss submissions and leading indicators, then stepped into a walk‑through of the injection and blow molding cells. An operator flags a potential pinch point at a newly installed robot cell—by noon, you’ve validated the workstation to company and regulatory standards, led a quick hazard review, and aligned maintenance on corrective actions. Before the day ends, you’ve chaired the Safety Committee, finalized an air permit submittal, and briefed senior leadership on TRIR and DART trends. That’s the rhythm of impact in this role.

What you’ll own

• Build, implement, and continually elevate the site’s EHS Management System for world‑class performance and ISO 14001 / ISO 45001 certification.
• Guarantee regulatory compliance and protect uninterrupted production in a fast‑paced plastics manufacturing environment—aiming for zero harm to people.
• Lead comprehensive risk assessments (JHA, PHA, LOTO, machine guarding, confined space, hot work, ergonomics, chemical handling) across injection molding, blow molding, extrusion, robotics, and auxiliary processes.
• Plan and conduct audits to verify performance against contracts, codes, and internal policy; drive closure of findings.
• Own OSHA/EPA/state/local compliance, including: air permits, stormwater, hazardous waste, SPCC, EPCRA Tier II & Form R, and wastewater programs. Champion sustainability initiatives for energy, water, and waste.
• Validate new equipment, machines, and workstations for regulatory and corporate safety standards prior to release.
• Chair the Safety Committee and strengthen engagement via behavioral‑based safety observations, toolbox talks, and near‑miss reporting.
• Lead incident investigations using root‑cause analysis and ensure robust corrective and preventive actions take hold.
• Design and deliver training: new‑hire EHS orientation, LOTO, forklifts, cranes, hazardous materials, emergency response, and contractor safety.
• Maintain the OSHA 300 log; monitor leading/lagging indicators; drive year‑over‑year reductions in TRIR and DART.
• Coordinate industrial hygiene monitoring (noise, dust, fumes) and communicate findings with action plans.
• Direct emergency response teams and site procedures; run drills and readiness checks.
• Manage workers’ compensation cases and return‑to‑work programs with empathy and discipline.
• Oversee and manage third‑party contracts for utilities, building and grounds maintenance; supervise service providers for waste removal, pest control, security, janitorial, landscaping, fire systems, and more.
• Lead contractors handling building repairs, fire and alarm systems, and HVAC; implement preventive and predictive maintenance with partners.
• Ensure compliance with building and fire codes and meet insurance requirements; serve as primary contact for regulatory inspections, insurance reviews, and corporate audits.
• Control spend and uncover cost‑savings opportunities in energy, water, and waste streams.
• Prepare and present clear monthly EHS and facilities performance reports to senior leadership.
• Directly supervise 1 EHS/Facilities Coordinator—coaching, prioritizing, and developing capabilities.

Key relationships

Global Leadership Team; all Department Managers and Supervisors; cross‑functional teams; internal and external customers.

Decision authority

Authority to make decisions on any issue that poses a risk to the health and safety of Mergon employees or those affected by the company’s activities.

What you bring

• Continuous improvement mindset with Lean manufacturing know‑how.
• Comfort managing operational metrics and KPIs, including LTIR measurement.
• Deep experience in operational risk management, workplace safety, and EHS leadership.
• Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) expertise and strong root‑cause analysis skills.
• Hands‑on ISO 14001 implementation and maintenance experience.
