Position Summary

The Standardized Patient (SP) is a trained individual who simulates a patient's medical condition, emotional state, and behavior in a consistent, realistic, and scripted manner for clinical education and assessment activities. Working with nursing faculty and simulation staff, SPs support nursing students in developing communication, assessment, and critical thinking skills in a controlled, supportive learning environment. No invasive procedures are performed on Standardized Patients.

Kellogg Community College is located in Battle Creek, Michigan, a community of approximately 54,000 people. Located along the I-94 interstate, Battle Creek is within 30 minutes of Kalamazoo, 60 minutes of Lansing and Grand Rapids and within three hours of Detroit, Chicago and Indianapolis.

Physical Demands

The job responsibilities are performed in an office area and presentation venues. Travel by car required. The job has intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as walking, standing, sitting, stooping, bending, climbing, lifting material or equipment, some of which may be heavy or awkward (8 - 45 pounds). Typically requires regular use of one or more physical senses of medium intensity and long duration. Must meet reasonable deadlines, quotas or demands for accuracy, and, may be involved in some mildly unpleasant situations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Strong memory and ability to follow instructions consistently.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to commit to scheduled shifts.
  • Comfortable with role-playing and acting in front of small groups.
  • Ability to give and receive feedback in a constructive and professional manner.

Preferred but not Required

  • Prior experience in acting, education, healthcare, or training as a standardized patient.
  • Experience working as a standardized patient
  • Knowledge of patient simulation services, technologies and applications
  • Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions such as previous medical license or certification (Nursing, Physical Therapy, EMS, First Responder, Radiographer, etc.)
  • Ability to act including expressing emotion and non-verbal communications within a scenario
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding job assignments and sensitive issues
  • Ability to work with internal and external individuals from different disciplines and different levels of training
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Good analytical and critical thinking skills

Proposed Salary

$20.00/hour

Job Duties

Essential Function ACTING Description

  • Portray a wide range of patient cases with emotional realism, consistency, and professionalism.
  • Re-enact patient scenarios repeatedly and accurately for multiple students, maintaining the same responses, tone, and nonverbal behaviors.
  • Demonstrate appropriate affect, expressions, and demeanor based on the clinical scenario (e.g., pain, confusion, anxiety, or calmness).
  • Simulate physical symptoms or conditions such as coughing, limping, or shortness of breath as outlined in the case.

Essential Function COMMUNICATION Description

  • Interact with nursing students in a professional and supportive manner during simulation encounters.
  • Respond to questions using scripted responses, staying within the defined case parameters.
  • Observe and remember key aspects of student behavior or communication for feedback purposes.
  • Participate in debriefings with faculty and staff, and when appropriate, deliver feedback to students on communication, empathy, and professionalism.

Essential Function ROLE PREPARATION Description

  • Attend scheduled training and rehearsal sessions to learn assigned cases, medical histories, and behavioral expectations.
  • Memorize and internalize case details, including patient background, emotional state, and potential student questions.
  • Collaborate with simulation educators to clarify case expectations and ensure fidelity in portrayal.
  • Review updated scripts or scenario modifications prior to scheduled simulations.

Essential Function PHYSICAL PARTICIPATION Description

  • Sit, stand, lie on examination tables, or assume other physical positions required by the simulation scenario.

  • Wear hospital gowns or appropriate attire as required for clinical realism.

  • Allow non-invasive medical procedures to be performed on their bodies with consent; this includes but is not limited to:

  • blood pressure screenings

  • pulse checks

  • initial patient surveys

  • palpation of injuries

  • neurological assessments

  • splinting

  • oxygen therapy or therapy devices

  • abdominal assessment

  • lung sound assessment

  • Wear fluid drains and other devices as needed within the scenario
