Now Hiring: Shop Technician / Fabricator
Reports To: Shop Manager / Production Manager
Position Summary
The Shop Technician / Fabricator is responsible for fabricating commercial aluminum and glass products according to company specifications. This position requires strong mechanical ability, attention to detail, and the ability to safely operate shop equipment and power tools. The Shop Technician ensures all fabricated products meet Planet Glass quality standards while maintaining a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Fabrication & Production: Fabricate commercial aluminum storefront, entrances, curtain wall, and related products. Read and interpret work orders, diagrams, shop drawings, and fabrication instructions; accurately measure materials using a tape measure and other precision tools; cut, drill, assemble, and prepare aluminum and glass products for installation; verify dimensions and materials before fabrication; inspect completed products for quality and accuracy; and label and organize completed materials for delivery or installation.
Shop Operations: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area. Safely operate fabrication equipment and power tools; perform routine maintenance and cleaning of shop equipment; load, unload, and organize incoming and outgoing materials; assist with inventory organization and material storage; and promptly report damaged materials, equipment issues, or production concerns.
Quality Control: Inspect fabricated materials for defects or inaccuracies; ensure all products meet Planet Glass quality standards; verify all required hardware and components are included before jobs leave the shop; and minimize material waste through careful planning and workmanship.
Safety: Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times. Follow OSHA and Planet Glass safety procedures; use proper lifting techniques and material-handling equipment; and immediately report accidents, injuries, and unsafe conditions.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED preferred. Previous fabrication, manufacturing, construction, or shop experience preferred. Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to work with your hands; ability to accurately read a tape measure; ability to read diagrams, shop drawings, blueprints, and written work instructions; and experience using hand and power tools, including drills, saws, grinders, impact drivers, and measuring tools.
Ability to safely lift and carry up to 75 pounds regularly; stand, bend, kneel, and reach in a physically demanding environment throughout the workday; maintain strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality work; demonstrate dependable attendance and a positive attitude; and work independently as well as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
Commercial aluminum storefront fabrication experience; glass fabrication or glazing experience; experience operating fabrication equipment; forklift experience or willingness to become certified; basic math skills, including fractions and measurements; ability to identify commercial aluminum extrusions and hardware; and experience reading fabrication schedules and shop production documents.
Physical Requirements
Frequently lift and carry materials weighing up to 75 pounds. Push, pull, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, and reach throughout the workday; stand for extended periods while fabricating materials; work safely around glass, aluminum, machinery, and power equipment; and work in varying shop temperatures and conditions.
