    Description

    POSITION OVERVIEW
The Shift Supervisor is a front-line leadership role responsible for directing all assigned-shift production activities across Coastal Machine’s CNC turning, 3/4-axis, and 5-axis milling cells. This role is the primary point of accountability for shift safety, on-time delivery, quality compliance, and workforce performance. This is not a supervisory role in name only. The Shift Supervisor is expected to drive accountability, eliminate production constraints, develop cell leads, and serve as a key driver of the cultural and operational standards required to compete and win in aerospace and defense manufacturing.
    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
    Production Ownership & Throughput
    • Own shift OTD (On-Time Delivery) performance; hold cell leads accountable to daily and weekly output targets
    • Review the ProShop production schedule each morning; identify capacity gaps, tooling shortfalls, or material risks before they impact throughput
    • Monitor Datanomix utilization data in real time; intervene on underperforming cells and document corrective actions
    • Coordinate job sequencing with the scheduling team to maximize machine uptime and minimize queue time between operations
    • Ensure all jobs running on shift are properly set up, documented in ProShop, and traveler-compliant before cutting begins
    Quality & Compliance Leadership
    • Enforce AS9100 Rev D and ISO 9001 work instruction compliance on every job — no exceptions for schedule pressure
    • Ensure First Article Inspection (FAI) requirements are communicated to operators and CMM team before first-off parts are released
    • Review and sign off on non-conformance reports (NCRs); initiate corrective/preventive action (CAPA) where required
    • Champion FOD (Foreign Object Debris) awareness and control procedures, particularly on Space and Defense programs
    • Actively reinforce a “quality first” culture where operators are empowered to stop production rather than pass nonconforming parts
    Team Leadership & Workforce Development
    • Directly supervise Cell Leads across all CNC cells on assigned shift; conduct regular 1:1s and provide real-time performance coaching
    • Identify high-potential operators for advancement into Cell Lead or setup roles as the company scales through the growth plan
    • Conduct daily shift startup meetings: communicate schedule priorities, safety topics, and quality alerts
    • Hold team members accountable through consistent, documented performance feedback; escalate HR matters appropriately
    • Partner with the oncoming Shift Supervisor on handoff protocol — written shift reports, open job status, and tooling/material flags are non-negotiable
    Safety & Housekeeping
    • Lead daily 5S walkthrough and enforce shop floor housekeeping standards across all cells
    • Conduct or delegate weekly safety observations; ensure all incidents and near-misses are documented same-day
    • Verify all operators are using required PPE and are trained on machine-specific safety procedures
    • Participate in and support OSHA compliance reviews and safety audits
    Continuous Improvement
    • Identify and surface recurring production inefficiencies, setup bottlenecks, and machine downtime patterns to Engineering and Management
    • Lead or support Kaizen/improvement initiatives on the shop floor; document results and sustain gains
    • Participate in capacity planning discussions as Coastal Machine adds machines and headcount.
    • Provide direct input into tooling standardization, work instruction improvement, and ProShop workflow optimization
    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • 5+ years of hands-on CNC machining experience in a precision manufacturing environment (turning and/or milling)
    • 2+ years in a lead, supervisory, or senior operator role with direct people responsibility
    • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and work instructions
    • Working knowledge of AS9100, API Q1, or ISO 9001 quality management requirements in a production setting
    • Proficient with ERP/MES systems for job tracking, scheduling, and documentation (ProShop experience a plus)
    • Strong communication skills — written and verbal — across operator, lead, and management levels
    • Track record of driving OTD, quality, and efficiency metrics on a production shift
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Direct experience in Aerospace, Defense, or Space manufacturing environments
    • Familiarity with ITAR-controlled environments and program documentation requirements
    • Experience with Datanomix or similar machine monitoring/OEE platforms
    • Background in 5-axis milling operations or complex turning cell supervision
    • Demonstrated experience coaching and developing frontline talent in a growth-stage shop
