SHERIFF"S OFFICE GENERAL COUNSEL/ATTORNEY

Represents the Greenville County Sheriff"s Office and its employees in matters of policy, laws and regulations. Provides legal advice and opinions on a variety of issues, including human resource law, criminal law, constitutional law and FOIA. Responsible for coordinating civil defense with outside counsel. Drafts pleadings, motions, briefs and memoranda, drafts general orders and internal policies, assists in development of best practices for the administrative functions of the GCSO. Provides legal advice and opinions to the Commanders on specific issues of law and procedures; makes court appearances as necessary; argues on behalf of the GCSO, any appropriate motions in both General Sessions Court and the Court of Common Pleas. Oversees function of Greenville Sheriff"s Foundation, including responsibility for day-to-day financial operation; attends Foundation Board meetings. Negotiates and settles small property damage claims resulting from daily police function; acts as internal liaison on larger property claims; advises office of Professional Standards when requested. Creates legal forms used in both the General Counsel"s office and the GCSO, in conjunction with routine work, act as liaison to county attorneys and outside counsel. Thorough knowledge of judicial and quasi-judicial procedures, as well as employment and Human Resources law. Ability to interpret and apply laws from court decisions to practical day-to-day policing circumstances. Ability to work quickly, under pressure, to make important decisions; ability to proficiently research obscure criminal law topics; ability to locate criminal statues and to apply them to practical day-to-day policing; thorough understanding of SC FOIA laws. Must possess a Doctorate of Laws from an Accredited law school. Considerable professional experience in labor law, governmental operations, administrative law, criminal law, or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must be a member in good standing of the Couth Carolina Bar Association. Salary based on experience.
