Sheet Metal Welding Technician
• Location: Newport News, VA• Schedule: Monday–Friday | 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM• Job Type: Full-Time• Pay: Starting at $18.00/hour+ based on experience and welding skill
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Sheet Metal Welding Technician to join a manufacturing team producing precision metal components. This role focuses on fitting, assembling, and welding light-gauge sheet metal parts according to production drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
The ideal candidate has experience working with thin-gauge materials in a production environment and can consistently produce accurate, high-quality welds.
Responsibilities
- Fit and weld sheet metal components using MIG welding processes.
- Read work orders, blueprints, drawings, and welding symbols to determine project requirements.
- Assemble and align parts using clamps, fixtures, and measuring tools.
- Perform welding in flat, vertical, and overhead positions as required.
- Inspect completed welds and assemblies to verify dimensional accuracy and quality standards.
- Work with steel, aluminum, and other metal alloys.
- Prepare materials through tack welding, grinding, heat bending, and related fabrication techniques.
- Select appropriate welding methods based on material type and job specifications.
- Perform routine equipment checks and assist with basic maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Maintain a safe, organized work area and follow all workplace safety procedures.
- Work efficiently to meet daily production goals and schedules.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of MIG welding experience in a manufacturing or production environment.
- Experience welding light-gauge sheet metal materials.
- Ability to read basic blueprints and understand welding symbols.
- Experience using measuring tools such as calipers, straightedges, templates, and gauges.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and team members.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and move materials weighing up to 100 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, twist, squat, reach, and perform repetitive hand movements throughout the workday.
- Comfortable working in varying temperatures commonly found in manufacturing facilities.
