Service Technician I (Entry-Level Field Technician)
About the Role
Hudson Technologies is urgently hiring a Service Technician I to join our field service team in the U.S. This entry-level role will travel to customer sites to assist in servicing large industrial refrigeration and cooling. The primary mission is to support refrigerant recovery and basic maintenance tasks that help reduce leaks and improve chiller performance. You will work under the close direction of senior technicians and supervisors, learning to apply your technical training on the job in real-world scenarios. This is an excellent immediate-hire opportunity for a hands-on learner eager to start a career in HVAC/R field service.
Key Responsibilities
- Field Service & Refrigerant Recovery: Travel to customer facilities to perform refrigerant recovery services and basic repairs under supervision, following proper procedures to safely remove or add refrigerant. Set up recovery equipment and ensure optimal chiller performance during service activities.
- Equipment Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Assist with routine maintenance of HVAC/R systems, including checking pressures and temperatures, changing filters or oil, and helping senior techs with component replacements. Apply mechanical aptitude and Hudson training to address basic issues in the field.
- Safety Protocols Compliance: Strictly adhere to all safety procedures and company standards on each assignment. Handle refrigerants safely (use proper PPE, follow EPA guidelines) and maintain a clean work area. Participate in tailgate safety meetings and follow instructions diligently to ensure every task is performed safely.
- Documentation and Reporting: Accurately log service activities and refrigerant quantities recovered. Provide timely updates on job progress and any issues encountered. Ensure all service reports and checklists are completed with attention to detail for internal tracking and customer communication.
- Customer Service Support: Interact with customers on-site in a courteous, professional manner. Provide status updates to clients’ personnel as needed and promptly escalate their technical questions to senior staff. Maintain a positive, customer-focused attitude to build trust and represent Hudson’s values well.
- General Support Duties: When not in the field, assist with depot and warehouse tasks to keep operations running smoothly. Help with shipping/receiving of refrigerant cylinders and equipment, upkeep and cleaning of recovery machines and tools, and ensure service equipment is maintained and ready for the next job. You may also perform basic refrigerant sampling or deliver parts to job sites as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Education & Experience: High school diploma or GED required. 0–1 years of relevant work experience (entry level). Technical school coursework in HVAC/R or hands-on mechanical experience is a plus.
- Certifications: EPA 608 Universal certification is strongly preferred (or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire) due to work with refrigerants. Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean record. Ability to obtain a DOT Medical Card (for operating commercial vehicles) is required. Forklift operator certification is required (or ability to attain one upon hire). A CDL Class B with HAZMAT endorsement is preferred since technicians often transport refrigerant cylinders.
- Technical Skills: Basic understanding of industrial HVAC/R systems and the refrigeration cycle. Fundamental electrical knowledge (e.g. familiarity with three-phase power and control wiring). Proficiency with hand tools, gauges, and recovery equipment. Physically able to lift ~50 lbs, climb ladders, and perform manual tasks in industrial environments.
- Soft Skills: Self-motivated with a strong desire to learn and grow. Good communication skills and ability to follow instructions and protocols. Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and a team-oriented mindset. Keen attention to detail and commitment to quality work, even at entry level.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of an HVAC or industrial trades vocational program or technical college coursework.
- Any prior internship or work experience in HVAC, refrigeration, or mechanical maintenance.
- EPA Universal certification already in hand (if not required above) and any additional relevant certifications (e.g. OSHA-10 safety training).
- CDL Class B with HAZMAT endorsement (strongly preferred if not already obtained).
- Familiarity with refrigerant recovery procedures or chiller systems through school or on-the-job exposure.
Physical demands
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing ladders, and working in confined spaces.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 100 lbs. regularly.
- Ability to work at heights, on rooftops, and in varying weather conditions.
- Frequent use of hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.
- Must be able to read gauges, wiring diagrams, and service documentation.
- Exposure to noise, temperature extremes, refrigerants, and mechanical equipment.
- Ability to wear required PPE and safely operate service vehicles and equipment.
- Flexibility to work overtime and respond to emergency or on-call service needs as required.
Travel Requirements
This position is field-based and requires extensive travel to customer sites. Expect approximately 60% travel to support projects across the U.S. You must be willing to drive long distances or fly as needed and spend multiple days on out-of-town assignments. Flexibility for occasional after-hours emergency calls and overtime is required. (All travel is company-paid and follows Hudson’s safety and travel policies.)
