Job Description: Senior VMware Infrastructure & Migration Engineer
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented VMware Infrastructure & Migration Engineer to execute complex virtualization migration initiatives across enterprise data centers and hybrid cloud environments. In this role, you will be responsible for planning and executing large-scale workload migrations (P2V, V2V, Data Center to Data Center, and on-premises to Hybrid/Public Cloud), optimizing virtual infrastructure performance, ensuring high availability, and automating operational workflows.
Key Responsibilities
- Migration Strategy & Execution
· Execute end-to-end migration lifecycle activities including assessment, discovery, wave planning, pilot testing, cutover execution, and post-migration validation.
· Execute large-scale virtual machine and workload migrations across heterogeneous platforms using tools such as VMware HCX, VMware vCenter Converter, Zerto, Carbonite/Double-Take, or native storage replication methods.
· Plan and perform vSphere upgrades and cross-vCenter migrations with minimal to zero business downtime.
· Coordinate migration cutover windows, rollback strategies, and contingency planning in alignment with strict change management protocols.
- VMware Infrastructure Administration & Architecture
· Design, deploy, configure, and maintain enterprise-grade VMware infrastructure, including vSphere (ESXi 7.x/8.x), vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA), vSAN, and NSX-T / NSX Data Center.
· Manage and optimize compute, memory, storage (SAN/NAS/iSCSI/NFS), and virtual networking configurations (Standard and Distributed Virtual Switches).
· Implement and manage enterprise disaster recovery (DR) solutions utilizing VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) and storage-based replication.
· Monitor infrastructure health, capacity utilization, and performance using VMware Aria Operations (formerly vRealize Operations) and log analysis tools.
- Automation, Scripting & Continuous Improvement
· Develop automation scripts and workflows using PowerCLI, PowerShell, Python, or Ansible to automate repetitive tasks, configuration audits, and migration tasks.
· Create automated validation checks for pre- and post-migration state verification.
· Maintain and update standard operating procedures (SOPs), migration runbooks, architectural diagrams, and configuration management documentation.
- Collaboration, Governance & Compliance
· Work closely with Application Owners, Database Administrators, Storage/Network Engineers, Security, and Project Management teams to establish migration timelines and dependencies.
· Ensure all virtual infrastructure adheres to enterprise security baselines, hardening guidelines, CIS benchmarks, and compliance frameworks.
· Participate in root-cause analysis (RCA) for migration incidents and provide level 3/4 escalation support for complex virtualization issues.
Required Qualifications & Experience
Education & Experience
· Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
· 5+ years of hands-on experience in enterprise VMware infrastructure administration and engineering.
· 3+ years of dedicated experience executing large-scale data center, virtualization, or cloud migration projects.
Technical Competencies
· Core VMware Stack: Expert-level knowledge of VMware vSphere (ESXi, vCenter 7.x/8.x), vSAN, and vCenter High Availability (VCHA).
· Migration Technologies: Demonstrated expertise with VMware HCX (L2 Network Extension, Bulk Migration, vMotion, Disaster Recovery replication), vCenter Converter, and storage vMotion.
· Networking & Security: Solid understanding of TCP/IP, VLANs, VXLAN/GENEVE, distributed switching, firewalls, load balancing, and VMware NSX-T.
· Storage: Proficiency with SAN/NAS protocols (Fibre Channel, iSCSI, NFS), VMFS/NFS datastore management, multipathing policies, and storage zoning.
· Scripting & Automation: Strong scripting proficiency with PowerCLI/PowerShell; experience with Python, Ansible, or Terraform is a strong plus.
· Disaster Recovery: Hands-on experience with VMware SRM, backup/restore solutions (e.g., Veeam, Commvault, Cohesity), and business continuity planning.
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience migrating workloads to/from public or hybrid cloud environments, such as VMware Cloud on AWS (VMC), Azure VMware Solution (AVS), or Google Cloud VMware Engine (GCVE).
· Familiarity with enterprise IT Service Management (ITSM) tools such as ServiceNow for change, incident, and release management.
· Experience with infrastructure discovery and dependency mapping tools (e.g., Device42, VMware Aria Operations for Networks / vRealize Network Insight, Cloudamize).
Certifications (Highly Desirable)
· VMware Certified Professional (VCP-DCV / VCP-NV) (Required or equivalent experience)
· VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP-DCV Design/Deploy) (Preferred)
