    Description

Join us at the forefront of AWS"s sustainability initiatives to work on the advancements that will deliver Amazon"s long term worldwide sustainability strategy. At Amazon, we"re working to be the most customer-centric company on earth. To get there, we need exceptionally talented, bright, and driven people.

AWS Global Sustainability (AWSGS) is a team of sustainability experts, scientists, engineers, program strategists, and product managers that deliver on our ambition to reach net-zero carbon by 2040 as part of Amazon's Climate Pledge, as well as manage and report on our sustainability progress more broadly.

We are looking for a results-oriented Sr. Sustainability Specialist who's passionate about building decarbonization into core business strategy. You bring deep subject matter expertise in GHG data management and accounting, and a clear point of view on the technologies and innovations needed to scale carbon-free power generation and transition to a net-zero electric grid. You have a demonstrated ability to think strategically about business, technical, and methodological challenges, with the skill set to drive tactical execution across multiple workstreams. You thrive in ambiguity - structuring problems, reaching defensible conclusions, and documenting clearly.

In this role you will engage partner teams across AWS infrastructure teams (energy, real estate, capacity delivery, environmental), to embed carbon-aware decision-making into how current and future AWS data centers are planned, sited, and built. You will work across science, engineering, and reporting teams to strengthen the integrity, granularity, and auditability of AWS"s GHG inventory, and will drive the development/adoption of new and improved carbon accounting methods as data and standards continue to mature.

    Key job responsibilities

In this role you will be responsible for:

Partner with infrastructure planning, real estate, energy, and data center design/engineering teams to integrate carbon considerations into siting, design, and development decisions.

Develop, document, and operationalize new and improved carbon accounting methodologies for both operational and embodied emissions across the AWS infrastructure lifecycle.

Own and mature the AWS GHG inventory - improving data quality, calculation methods, emission factors, and Scope 1, 2, and 3 boundary definitions - and ensure alignment with evolving reporting standards.

Serve as a subject-matter expert on carbon accounting and GHG inventory methodology within the group and across partner teams.

Measure the carbon impact of current and future infrastructure and sustainability programs, and effectively communicate results to key decision-makers and leaders.

Responsible for program delivery, developing metrics, internal and audit-ready reporting, and managing data inputs from multiple teams.

Bring a solutions-oriented mindset, offering creative, rigorous, and defensible approaches to measurement challenges.

    About Company

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
