Position Title : Senior Specialty Commercial Property Underwriter
- DETAILS OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- About the role:
We are seeking a Senior Specialty Commercial Property Underwriter to underwrite complex commercial property risks from submission through quote, bind, and renewal. This role will have meaningful responsibility for risk selection, pricing, coverage structure, broker relationships, and portfolio quality.
The Senior Underwriter will work closely with underwriting leadership, actuarial, claims, inspection, and technology teams, and will help mentor less-experienced underwriters.- Responsibilities:
- Underwrite new and renewal commercial property business within established authority and underwriting guidelines.
- Evaluate COPE information, loss history, valuation, inspections, building condition, and third-party property data.
- Determine appropriate pricing, deductibles, limits, terms, conditions, exclusions, and coverage structures.
- Manage accounts through rate, quote, bind, endorsement, and renewal.
- Communicate directly with wholesale brokers regarding underwriting requirements and coverage terms.
- Review and apply AAIS, ISO, and manuscript commercial property forms and endorsements.
- Use property valuation, hazard, geospatial, inspection, and AI-assisted underwriting tools.
- Monitor portfolio performance, concentrations, loss trends, and emerging underwriting issues.
- Mentor junior underwriting staff and support consistent underwriting documentation and decision-making.
- Contribute to underwriting guidelines, product development, and process improvement.
- QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
- Qualifications
- 5+ years of commercial property underwriting experience, preferably in an MGA, E&S carrier, specialty insurer, or wholesale-focused underwriting environment.
- Demonstrated experience independently pricing, quoting, and binding commercial property risks.
- Strong understanding of COPE, property valuation, loss drivers, and commercial property coverage structures.
- Familiarity with ISO and/or AAIS commercial property forms.
- Experience using underwriting workbenches, rating platforms, policy administration systems, and property risk data.
- Strong broker communication, analytical judgment, and file documentation skills.
- Experience with older, historic, specialty, or complex properties is preferred but not required.
- CPCU, ARM, AU, or similar professional designation is beneficial.
