Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer with 10+ years of experience to help design, build, and evolve our software platforms and AI-enabled applications. This is a senior, hands-on individual contributor position for someone who enjoys solving complex engineering problems, takes ownership of production systems, and can help guide other engineers.
You will work closely with our Software & AI Architect, product stakeholders, data scientists, and laboratory teams to develop scalable applications supporting customers and internal scientific workflows. We are looking for strong software engineering fundamentals first. Experience with applied AI is valuable, but we do not expect candidates to be AI researchers or experts in every emerging AI framework.
Key Responsibilities
Software Architecture and Development
- Design, develop, and maintain reliable, scalable, cloud-based software applications.
- Lead the technical design and implementation of significant features, services, and integrations.
- Build and maintain backend services, REST APIs, data models, and integrations with internal and external systems.
- Contribute to architectural decisions, system modernization, and improvements in scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
- Write high-quality, maintainable, well-tested code while remaining actively involved in implementation.
AI- Enabled Applications
- Help incorporate AI and large language models into existing software products and workflows.
- Develop practical AI-enabled features, including intelligent assistants, workflow automation, and integrations with AI services.
- Collaborate with data scientists and AI engineers to turn prototypes into reliable production applications.
- Evaluate AI tools and frameworks based on business value, engineering feasibility, security, and maintainability.
Technical Leadership
- Take end-to-end ownership of complex engineering initiatives, from design through deployment and support.
- Mentor engineers through design discussions, code reviews, and technical problem-solving.
- Establish and promote effective engineering practices, including automated testing, CI/CD, documentation, and code quality.
- Work collaboratively across engineering, operations, scientific, and commercial teams.
- Identify and address technical debt and production reliability issues.
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial hands-on development of production applications.
- Strong proficiency in at least one modern backend programming language, such as Python, C#, or Java.
- Extensive experience designing and developing REST APIs and backend services.
- Strong understanding of relational and/or NoSQL databases, data modeling, and application integration.
- Experience building, deploying, and operating cloud-based applications using AWS or comparable cloud platforms.
- Strong knowledge of software architecture, object-oriented design, design patterns, and distributed systems.
- Demonstrated ability to independently lead complex technical projects and make sound engineering trade-offs.
- Experience with automated testing, code reviews, CI/CD pipelines, and production troubleshooting.
- Ability to mentor other engineers and improve team engineering practices.
- Strong analytical, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Interest in applying AI technologies to practical software products and business problems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with microservices, event-driven architectures, and cloud-native application development.
- Familiarity with frontend technologies such as React or modern JavaScript/TypeScript frameworks.
- Experience integrating large language models through APIs.
- Familiarity with AI agents, tool calling, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), or AI application frameworks.
- Experience with workflow automation, data-intensive applications, or enterprise integrations.
- Experience developing software for scientific, laboratory, manufacturing, or industrial environments.
- Experience modernizing existing systems while delivering new capabilities.
- Experience in a startup or growing technology organization.
