GRAIL is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for the Commercial engineering team within our Technology organization. Our team builds and operates the patient- and provider-facing software behind the Galleri® test, including my.grail.com and provider.grail.com, along with the systems that collect and deliver the clinical data the test depends on. The software we write sits directly in the path between a patient ordering a test and a physician acting on the result, so correctness, reliability, and clarity matter as much as velocity.
This is a backend-leaning full-stack role for an engineer who wants meaningful ownership. You will design and build cloud-native services in Go on AWS and Kubernetes, and you will follow your work through to the React interfaces that patients and clinicians actually use. You will own systems end to end — design, implementation, testing, rollout, and production operation — and you will help raise the bar for the engineers around you. If you want your work to have a direct line to earlier cancer detection, this is a rare place to do it.
This role is based in Sunnyvale, California. It offers a flexible work arrangement, with the ability to work from GRAIL's office or from home. Our current flexible work arrangement policy requires that a minimum of 60%, or 24 hours, of your total work week be on-site. Your specific schedule, determined in collaboration with your manager, will align with team and business needs and could exceed the 60% requirement for the site. At our Sunnyvale campus, Tuesdays and Thursdays are the key days where we encourage on-site presence to engage in events and on-site activities.
Design, build, and operate backend services and distributed systems that power GRAIL's commercial offerings for the Galleri® test, including my.grail.com and provider.grail.com.
Own features and services end to end, from technical design through implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.
Contribute across the stack, building and maintaining React interfaces used by patients, clinicians, and internal clinical operations teams.
Lead the technical design of projects of diverse scope, working independently and bringing designs forward for review at critical decision points.
Devise solutions where precedent is limited, adapting existing approaches and exercising judgment to select the right course of action.
Partner with product managers, clinical operations, and other engineering teams to turn ambiguous requirements into clear technical plans, advising senior stakeholders who may not share your technical background and adapting how you communicate to the audience.
Write and maintain automated tests and test protocols appropriate for software operating in a regulated healthcare environment.
Improve the reliability and observability of the systems you own, participating in on-call rotation, incident response, and follow-up remediation.
Raise engineering quality on the team through code review, pairing, and mentorship of less experienced engineers.
Identify and drive improvements to our tooling, CI/CD pipelines, and development practices.
These responsibilities summarize the role's primary responsibilities and are not an exhaustive list. They may change at the company's discretion.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Bioinformatics, or a similar technical field with 5+ years of related experience, or a Master's degree with 2+ years of related experience, or a PhD, or equivalent experience.
Professional experience designing, developing, testing, and maintaining production backend or full-stack applications.
Professional experience building and operating services on a major cloud platform such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
Proficiency in at least one backend programming language such as Go, Java, Python, or C++.
Strong professional written and verbal communication skills.
Experience writing production Go, and experience with gRPC-based service communication.
Experience building and maintaining production React applications.
Hands-on experience with AWS specifically, including infrastructure as code using Terraform.
Experience operating containerized workloads with Kubernetes and Docker in production.
Experience designing and scaling microservice architectures, including service boundaries, versioning, and backward compatibility.
Strong working knowledge of relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL, including schema design and query performance, and of caching layers such as Redis.
Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing strategies, and agile development practices.
Experience building software in healthcare or another regulated domain, including familiarity with HIPAA, PHI handling, or software quality and validation requirements.
Experience with observability and reliability tooling, and a track record of improving system uptime.
Experience mentoring engineers or leading small project teams.
A demonstrated passion for designing and building practical, high-quality software, and a desire to add value to the team.
