This is a search for engineers who bring judgment as well as technical depth. The strongest candidates will have seen how engineering organizations operate at scale, taken on increasing responsibility over time, and know how to apply that experience in a fast-moving environment.
About Symbium
Symbium is reinventing how citizens interact with local government, beginning with permitting for clean energy projects. Its proprietary Computational Law platform, Complaw®, translates regulations into executable logic so people can understand what is possible on a property, determine eligibility, and obtain approvals faster.
Symbium works with more than 270 cities and jurisdictions across the United States. The platform supports permitting for projects including solar panels, EV chargers, heat pumps, reroofing, and electrical upgrades. The technology originated from work at Stanford’s AI Lab and brings together legal reasoning, product engineering, and dependable software systems.
The team is four people and highly collaborative. Leaders and engineers share ideas, tackle problems together, and stay close to the work. This is an opportunity to work directly with the CTO and CEO, help shape the engineering organization, and build technology with a clear public impact.
The Opportunity
Symbium is hiring two Senior Software Engineers who will own major technical initiatives, work across the stack, and help advance the platform as it grows. Both roles require strong full-stack skills, sound technical judgment, and the ability to work independently while staying closely aligned with the team.
The two openings share a common foundation but may emphasize different areas of the platform based on each hire’s strengths and the company’s evolving needs.
Platform and Operations Focus
One engineer may focus more heavily on the platform and operational foundation. This work includes strengthening infrastructure, improving reliability and observability, evolving development and deployment practices, and refactoring systems so the product can serve more jurisdictions and increasingly complex use cases.
Product Engineering and AI Focus
One engineer may focus more deeply on the Complaw® system, product capabilities, and AI roadmap. This work includes translating regulations into logical statements, extending the schemas and rule structures behind compliance workflows, and building tools that make the law-to-code framework more effective and maintainable.
This includes using predictive AI to accelerate comprehension of new regulations, user intent, plan sets, and other unstructured inputs, while keeping the underlying inference decisions deterministic and explainable.
What You Will Do
Build and Scale Core Systems
• Design, build, and operate reliable workflows, APIs, integrations, and backend systems that support high-reliability permitting functions.
• Lead end-to-end delivery, from technical design and implementation through deployment, monitoring, and iteration.
• Improve engineering quality through thoughtful testing, observability, data modeling, code review, and continuous improvement.
• Contribute to platform architecture that is scalable, maintainable, secure, and performant.
Turn Regulation Into Software
• Work with policy and domain experts to interpret regulatory text and express it as structured, verifiable logic.
• Extend the schemas, rule structures, and reasoning capabilities behind Complaw® workflows as laws and use cases evolve.
• Diagnose rule chains from input facts to conclusions, preserving a clear explanation of why a compliance check passed or failed.
• Build for precision. In this environment, answers must be reliable, traceable, and understandable to the people who rely on them.
Shape Technical Direction and Team Practices
• Help set architectural direction, engineering standards, tooling decisions, and documentation practices.
• Partner with product, design, policy experts, customers, and leadership to clarify requirements and make practical technical decisions.
• Provide useful design feedback and code reviews, mentor teammates, and help new engineers become productive quickly.
• Take initiative to provide executive updates and proposals at key intervals, particularly when priorities, risks, or tradeoffs need attention.
What Success Looks Like
You will thrive at Symbium if you are organized, proactive, and comfortable setting priorities in an environment where priorities can change. You can break down ambiguous problems, make a plan, reprioritize when new information appears, and communicate clearly about progress, risks, and decisions.
You do not simply wait for direction. You bring structure to complex work, ask the questions that unblock progress, and offer recommendations that help the team make sound decisions. You are comfortable working closely with founders, executing on an ambitious vision, and raising concerns constructively when you see a better path.
Required Qualifications
• 7+ years of hands-on software engineering experience designing, building, and maintaining production systems end to end.
• Strong full-stack engineering experience across backend services, APIs, cloud infrastructure, and modern front-end development.
• Deep proficiency in JavaScript or TypeScript and Node.js, with experience operating reliable systems in AWS or a comparable cloud environment.
• Strong database and SQL experience, including schema design, data modeling, query performance, and index strategy.
• Experience with architecture, technical decision-making, and the delivery of complex software initiatives.
• Demonstrated ability to work in organizations that have scaled, or are already operating at scale, with exposure to multiple levels of responsibility over the course of your career.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and reprioritize effectively as needs evolve.
• Clear, proactive communication skills, including the ability to provide executive updates and present proposals at appropriate decision points.
• A high standard of ownership, accountability, precision, and operational excellence in mission-critical systems.
• A commitment to using AI as an amplifier of engineering judgment, not a substitute for it, and to taking ownership of your own work.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with logic, constraint, or declarative programming, such as Prolog, Datalog, or related approaches.
• Experience building AI or machine-learning-enabled features for production environments, especially systems where outputs must be controlled, deterministic, or explainable.
• Experience with platform engineering, DevOps, system migrations, reliability engineering, or scaling distributed systems.
• Experience building or integrating with government systems, regulated industries, or third-party APIs with strict compliance requirements.
• Experience building compilers, rule engines, domain-specific languages, or similarly structured reasoning systems.
• Experience across organizations of different sizes and stages, with demonstrated growth through multiple levels of engineering responsibility.
• Interest or experience in permitting, clean energy, government technology, or civic technology.
Why Symbium
The work at Symbium is both technically demanding and immediately meaningful. Every improvement to the platform can help homeowners, contractors, and local governments move clean energy projects forward with less friction and more certainty.
You will join a high-ownership team where good ideas can shape the product, systems, and engineering culture. You will have close collaboration with company leadership, room to grow your technical influence, and the opportunity to solve a problem that is rarely addressed through software alone.
