The City of Waco Seeks
An experienced worker to safely trim, maintain, and manage city trees, operate heavy equipment, and assist with general park groundskeeping
Minimum Qualifications
Required:
- A Class B CDL is required within 180 Days
- H.S. Diploma or GED equivalent
- 2 years of experience in landscaping and grounds keeping work or construction
Position Overview
Under basic supervision, performs experienced semiskilled general labor work in maintaining City parks and grounds; operates and maintains tools, equipment, and heavy equipment.
Essential Functions
- Performs unskilled and semiskilled manual labor tasks to maintain a safe and attractive park system; maintains park facilities and grounds and follows all safety rules and regulations; works independently and makes appropriate decisions based on work experience; duties may vary according to job assignment.
- Performs maintenance and repair of public restrooms, splash pads, playgrounds, sports courts, and sports facilities. Assists with special events.
- Operates heavy mechanized equipment, such as backhoe, skid steer, and loader; performs other duties as needed, such as parks cleaning and maintenance tasks, including weed control, mowing, planting, and watering; cleans up trash and debris and cleans facilities; prunes and trims trees and shrubs; assists with irrigation systems and chemical applications; loads and hauls materials.
- Inspects specialty vehicles and heavy equipment for proper operating condition; repairs and adjusts equipment and performs maintenance and preventive maintenance as needed.
- Identifies site hazards and maintains safe drop zones and work areas. Uses required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times and participates in daily safety briefings and emergency response protocols.
- Enforces rules and regulations; assists with training new staff; reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents, and injuries; performs emergency cleaning and maintenance work as directed.
- Position assigned to Forestry: Prunes, trims, and removes trees within city parks, public rights-of-way, and municipal properties. Shapes trees to encourage healthy growth, improves aesthetics, and clears structures. Performs routine inspections of public trees to mitigate hazardous liabilities, clearing blocked signs, and keeping public areas safe. Investigates residential tree complaints and guides citizen groups.
- May be required to respond after hours, including holidays and weekends, to assist with special events or a departmental or City-wide emergency.
