Senior Project Controls Specialist

Location: Kansas City, MO
Position Type: Contract-to-Hire

Aspen Technical Staffing is seeking an experienced Senior Project Controls Specialist for a contract-to-hire opportunity with one of our engineering and construction clients in Kansas City, MO. This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced project controls professional who thrives in large-scale EPC environments and enjoys leading project controls strategy, scheduling, cost management, forecasting, and reporting from project initiation through completion.

This position will work closely with project management, engineering, procurement, construction, and accounting teams to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with client expectations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead project controls processes throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Partner with Project Managers and leadership to ensure successful project execution and client satisfaction.
  • Present schedule, cost, and budget status reports to project management teams and clients.
  • Validate the proper setup and management of Enterprise Planning & Controls software.
  • Analyze project data, logs, and reports to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Ensure proper Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) development and implementation.
  • Develop and maintain:
    • Project schedules
    • Cost reports
    • Cash flow reports
    • Forecasts
    • Executive reporting dashboards
  • Develop, implement, and manage reporting data warehouses for multiple large projects.
  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and technical guidance to project controls personnel.
  • Assist in developing and implementing project execution plans.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors, and project stakeholders.
  • Lead engineering, procurement, construction planning, scheduling, logistics, and cost control efforts.
  • Serve as the technical point of contact for project controls questions.
  • Validate cost management, forecasting, and earned value reporting accuracy.
  • Coordinate with Project Management and Accounting to review project costs, contingencies, and support external audits.
  • Review and negotiate:
    • Prime agreements
    • Construction contracts
    • Subcontracts
    • Purchase orders
    • Change orders
  • Analyze project cash flow and financial performance.
  • Lead Interactive Project Planning Meetings (IPPM).
  • Present project controls reports to internal leadership and clients.
  • Monitor and validate schedule progress using Critical Path Method (CPM) scheduling techniques.
  • Perform schedule analysis, "what-if" scenarios, forecasting, and progress evaluations.
  • Analyze earned value metrics, progress measurement, and progress curves.
  • Perform and review material takeoffs.
  • Lead project risk management activities.
  • Perform quality reviews of project controls deliverables.
  • Conduct field audits to verify reporting accuracy and project controls processes.
  • Perform project forensic analysis when required.
  • Support additional project controls activities as assigned.
  • Comply with all company safety policies and standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline preferred.
  • Equivalent applicable project controls experience may be substituted for degree requirements.
  • Minimum of 7 years of direct Project Controls experience supporting engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects.
  • Strong experience with:
    • Critical Path Method (CPM) scheduling
    • Project cost management
    • Estimating
    • Forecasting
    • Document control
  • Experience with Oracle Primavera P6 preferred.
  • Experience integrating engineering, procurement, and construction schedules is highly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of project planning, scheduling, logistics, and cost controls.
  • Experience reviewing contracts, purchase orders, subcontract agreements, and change management.
  • Knowledge of earned value management systems and project forecasting.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong presentation and communication abilities.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • OSHA 10-Hour Certification or the ability to obtain certification.

Travel

  • Travel to project sites will be required throughout 2026.
  • Potential relocation to a project site during 2027 based on project needs.
