Job Summary

Translates process and project requirements into safe, maintainable, and constructible piping systems while providing technical leadership, design oversight, and interdisciplinary coordination. Responsible for piping standards, 3D modeling practices, design quality, field verification, and support through project startup and closeout.

 

Job Description

  • Lead piping design activities for large and complex capital projects.
  • Develop safe, maintainable, constructible, and code-compliant piping layouts and design packages.
  • Translate process, utility, equipment, and project requirements into detailed piping designs.
  • Prepare and review 3D models, piping layouts, plans, sections, isometrics, pipe support details, tie-in details, demolition drawings, bills of material, and vendor documentation.
  • Develop preliminary layouts, material takeoffs, tie-in information, and constructability assessments for project estimates.
  • Perform field walkdowns to verify existing conditions, collect measurements, identify interferences, and validate constructability.
  • Coordinate closely with process, mechanical, civil/structural, electrical, instrumentation, controls, construction, operations, maintenance, and project management teams.
  • Review P&IDs, utility flow diagrams, equipment layouts, piping specifications, and vendor drawings to develop integrated design solutions.
  • Provide technical guidance on piping layouts, equipment arrangements, constructability, installation sequencing, and construction details.
  • Oversee and coordinate piping-related deliverables from engineering consultants, EPCM firms, fabricators, contractors, and equipment vendors.
  • Support design reviews, model reviews, hazard reviews, constructability reviews, and project readiness reviews.
  • Lead design documentation and project closeout activities, including drawing revisions, construction records, and as-built updates.
  • Support commissioning, checkout, startup activities, and resolution of field design issues.
  • Develop and maintain piping design standards, CAD tools, drawing templates, and discipline-specific design practices.
  • Mentor designers and support coordination of internal and external design resources.

 

Skills Required

  • Minimum 12 years of relevant piping design experience.
  • Experience in chemical, agricultural, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, process, or industrial facilities preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience leading piping design deliverables from concept through construction and startup.
  • Advanced piping design and plant layout expertise.
  • Proficiency with CAD and 3D modeling software (AutoCAD, AutoCAD Plant 3D, CADWorx, SmartPlant, MicroStation, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of P&IDs, piping plans, sections, isometrics, and piping deliverables.
  • Knowledge of piping materials, valves, fittings, supports, equipment nozzles, and installation practices.
  • Familiarity with applicable piping codes and standards, including ASME B31.3.
  • Strong field verification and constructability review skills.
  • Excellent spatial visualization and problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience with interdisciplinary engineering coordination.
  • Strong technical communication and documentation skills.
  • Drawing quality control and design review experience.
  • Leadership, mentoring, and project coordination capabilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
  • Experience coordinating contractors, consultants, EPCM firms, and equipment vendors.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership and oversight on complex capital projects.
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality, maintainability, and constructability principles.

 

Education/Training/Certifications

  • Associate Degree in Design or Drafting Technology; or
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology; or
  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Training in piping design, plant layout, CAD, and 3D modeling systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of industry piping codes and standards, including ASME B31.3 preferred.

 

Additional Requirements

  • Must be able to pass drug screenings and criminal background checks
  • Start Time: 08:00 AM
  • Ability to perform field visits and site walkdowns as required.
  • Ability to travel locally, regionally, and globally as project needs require.
  • 25-30% of travel required.

 

Pay Rate/Salary

  • Estimated Salary: $63.43 to $78.57 per hour. Compensation will be offered within this posted range based on experience, skills, and market factors.
