Description

Position: Sr. Manufacturing Engineer,Req#: 19433-1

Location: Draper, UT (100% Onsite)
Duration: 11+ Months Contract with the possibility of extension

Job Description:

The Contract Senior Manufacturing Engineer will provide sustaining engineering support for precision-machined medical device components, with an initial focus on the nut, bolt, and distal plate. This role will support a newer machining capability within the manufacturing site and will be responsible for improving manufacturability, process capability, yield, cycle time, product quality, equipment reliability, and overall production performance. The engineer will bring strong precision-machining knowledge while working within a regulated manufacturing environment. The role will also help transfer machining knowledge from technicians currently operating the production line and support the continued commercialization and stabilization of manufacturing processes recently transferred from R&D.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or another related engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Candidates with 3–4 years of highly relevant precision-machining and regulated manufacturing experience may be considered.
  • Relevant manufacturing, machining, process-development, or sustaining-engineering experience. Five or more years is preferred; candidates with approximately 3–4 years of strong directly relevant experience may also be considered.
  • Hands-on engineering experience with Swiss turning, CNC milling, multi-axis machining, micromachining, or comparable precision-machining processes. Swiss machining specifically is not required.
  • Experience working within a regulated or highly controlled manufacturing environment, such as medical device, pharmaceutical, aerospace, automotive, or a comparable industry.
  • Demonstrated experience with process qualification and/or validation, nonconformance investigations, and engineering changes within a controlled manufacturing environment.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering drawings, GD&T, tooling, fixturing, cutting parameters, dimensional control, tolerances, and process capability.
  • Experience with root-cause analysis, engineering studies, and data-driven process improvement.
  • Ability to understand, troubleshoot, and optimize machining equipment and processes.
  • Ability to modify or optimize existing CNC programs as needed to support manufacturing improvements.
  • Ability to work effectively on the manufacturing floor and independently drive engineering activities to completion.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Medical device manufacturing experience.
  • Experience supporting the transition or commercialization of products from R&D into production.
  • Experience with tight-tolerance, complex metal components, particularly small precision-machined components.
  • Experience machining titanium or similar materials.
  • Experience with Swiss turning and/or multi-axis CNC machining.
  • Knowledge of GMP or comparable regulated manufacturing practices.
  • Experience with statistical process control and measurement-system analysis.
  • CAD/CAM experience.
  • Lean or Six Sigma experience.

Additional Hiring Manager Clarifications

  • This is an engineering role, not a machinist or technician-only position. Strong machining expertise must be paired with regulated manufacturing/process engineering experience.
  • Medical device experience is preferred but not mandatory. Relevant regulated experience from pharmaceutical, aerospace, automotive, or similar environments may be considered.
  • The material discussed during the supplier inquiry call is titanium.
  • The components were described as small, tight-tolerance parts, generally less than one inch and comparable in shape/scale to a nut or bolt.
  • Non-local candidates willing to relocate may be considered.
  • Interview process: initial one-on-one screening interview followed by a more in-depth technical interview with current technical SMEs.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide sustaining engineering support for precision-machining processes and equipment.
  • Identify and implement improvements to tooling, fixtures, workstations, setups, cutting parameters, process controls, and machining methods.
  • Troubleshoot dimensional variation, surface-finish defects, burrs, tool wear, scrap, rework, process instability, and equipment-related manufacturing issues.
  • Analyze the interaction between part design, tolerances, materials, machining methods, and inspection requirements.
  • Improve product quality, manufacturing yield, cycle time, equipment reliability, and overall process capability.
  • Lead structured root-cause investigations and engineering studies using data and statistical methods.
  • Support process qualifications, validations, nonconformance investigations, corrective actions, and controlled manufacturing changes.
  • Review and optimize existing CNC programs and machining parameters where opportunities exist to improve cycle time, yield, quality, or process performance. Candidates should be capable of making CNC program modifications directly when needed.
  • Support knowledge transfer from machinists and technicians currently operating the manufacturing line and help establish sustainable machining practices within the site.
  • Update work instructions, process documentation, risk assessments, validation documentation, and technical reports.
  • Partner with machinists, technicians, Operations, Quality, Maintenance, and other engineering functions.
  • Verify that implemented improvements are effective, documented, compliant, and sustainable.
