Description

Senior Fire Protection Engineer

The Senior Fire Protection Engineer is responsible for planning, coordinating, and leading fire protection engineering activities for semiconductor, AI datacenter, and life sciences/pharmaceutical projects. This role provides technical leadership, develops fire protection system designs, coordinates with clients and project teams, supports engineering standards and procedures, and mentors junior engineering staff.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, schedule, coordinate, and execute detailed fire protection engineering activities on assigned projects.
  • Develop and review fire protection system designs, specifications, material requisitions, technical bid evaluations, and award recommendations.
  • Resolve complex engineering challenges, including conflicting design requirements and coordination issues.
  • Utilize Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs) and support development of Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design guides, and engineering standards.
  • Coordinate engineering efforts with clients, suppliers, contractors, and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Serve as a technical lead for engineers and project subgroups, providing guidance and oversight.
  • Communicate technical issues, recommendations, and solutions to project management and supervisors.
  • Mentor designers and drafters through on-the-job training and professional development support.
  • Manage engineering subcontracts and ensure design and delivery meet contractual requirements.
  • Support a collaborative work environment that promotes communication, teamwork, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide field support, troubleshoot issues at job sites, and recommend corrective actions.

Required

  • Minimum 10 years of fire protection engineering experience within semiconductor, AI datacenter, life sciences, or pharmaceutical industries.
  • Ability to independently design and specify fire protection systems, including sprinkler systems, fire-water pumps, storage tanks, and fire-water distribution systems.
  • Experience performing hydraulic calculations and sizing fire-water piping systems.
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • NFPA 13 – Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems
    • NFPA 14 – Standard for Standpipe and Hose Systems
    • NFPA 214 – Cooling Tower Fire Protection
    • FM Global standards
  • Experience with wet pipe, deluge, standpipe, fire pump, and fire-water storage systems.
  • Knowledge of fire protection testing, acceptance procedures, AHJ requirements, and regulatory approvals.
  • Experience coordinating approvals with owners, contractors, project teams, and regulatory agencies.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards including ASME, IBC, IMC, and NFPA.
  • Strong understanding of engineering design principles, calculations, construction practices, and project execution.
  • Ability to troubleshoot field issues and provide technical direction for resolution.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, conflicting deadlines, and changing project demands.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited university (or international equivalent).
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant fire protection engineering experience.
  • Experience supporting semiconductor, AI datacenter, life sciences, and/or pharmaceutical projects preferred.
