Job Summary

This is a Senior Engineer role focused on transmission and distribution line design for a large investor-owned electric utility serving approximately 15 million people across a 50,000 square-mile service territory in Central, Coastal, and Southern California. The position is primarily an engineering design and execution role — not a project management role — with the engineer responsible for performing design work and reviewing engineering designs produced by other engineers. PLS-CADD expertise is critical: candidates must be able to build PLS-CADD models from scratch and independently troubleshoot them, and must be fully versed in both PLS-CADD and PLS-Pole given the seniority of the position. The approximate work breakdown is 75% overhead line design and 25% pole and foundation analysis. Candidates may support projects involving distribution voltages (4 kV to 33 kV) and transmission voltages (66 kV, 115 kV, and potentially 220 kV). A strong preference exists for candidates with direct electric utility transmission/distribution engineering experience, as utility engineering is highly specialized and direct industry experience is necessary to possess the required PLS-CADD background. This is a hybrid role requiring onsite presence on Wednesdays and Thursdays; remote-only candidates are not being considered.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform transmission and distribution line design and analysis using tools such as PLS-CADD, PLS-Pole, SPIDAcalc, and related engineering software.
  • Develop and review engineering packages for overhead line and pole/foundation projects.
  • Perform engineering calculations and ensure designs comply with GO95, NESC, ASCE, and SCE standards.
  • Support construction and field personnel by resolving design-related issues and participating in field visits when needed.
  • Provide technical support to project teams and collaborate with other engineering disciplines.
  • Support continuous improvement of engineering standards, procedures, and design practices.

Required Skills

  • 3 years of electric utility transmission and/or distribution line design experience.
  • Experience using PLS-CADD and/or PLS-Pole; must be able to build PLS-CADD models from scratch and independently troubleshoot them.
  • Knowledge of GO95, NESC, and applicable utility design standards.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to independently perform engineering design work and technical reviews.
  • Experience with GO95 requirements is important.
  • Familiarity with SPIDAcalc (referenced as an internal program/tool).

Preferred Skills

  • SPIDAcalc experience.
  • PLS-Caisson experience.
  • California utility experience.
  • Experience with pole and foundation design.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, or related Engineering discipline (required).

Required Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of electric utility transmission and/or distribution line design experience.
  • Strong preference for candidates with electric utility transmission/distribution engineering experience; utility engineering is highly specialized and candidates should have direct industry experience to possess the required PLS-CADD background.

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

  • Hybrid schedule with 2 days per week onsite (Wednesday and Thursday); remote-only candidates are not being considered.
  • Field visits may be required depending on project needs.
  • Participation in field activities may increase during emergency events (e.g., fire-related response efforts).
  • Some assignments could require overnight travel, depending on project requirements.
  • Candidates may support projects involving distribution voltages (4 kV to 33 kV) and transmission voltages (66 kV, 115 kV, and potentially 220 kV).

Important Notes

  • Interview Process: Initial step is a virtual Teams meet-and-greet (approximately 1 hour); participants typically include the four M1 managers within Transmission Engineering and the Senior Manager; additional interview rounds may occur if needed.

Benefits

  • Medical, Vision, and Dental Insurance Plans
  • 401k Retirement Fund
