Role Definition
Designs, develops, implements, and supports connectivity solutions enabling connected machines, remote operations, digital services, and autonomous technologies. Provides technical leadership across connectivity systems, including cellular, satellite, edge computing, telemetry, cloud integration, and data pipeline architectures.
This position partners closely with Product Management, Architecture, and Engineering teams to deliver scalable, reliable, and secure connectivity solutions that power Caterpillar's connected ecosystem. The successful candidate will lead technical design efforts, solve complex system challenges, influence architecture decisions, and mentor engineers across multiple connectivity initiatives.
Responsibilities
Design, develop, test, deploy, and support connectivity solutions across machine, site, edge, and cloud environments.
Lead development of software and services supporting machine telemetry, remote monitoring, fleet management, digital products, and autonomous operations.
Design and implement connectivity solutions leveraging:
Cellular technologies (LTE, LTE-M, NB-IoT, 5G)
Satellite communications (including Starlink)
Private LTE and Private 5G networks
Wi-Fi and industrial networking solutions
Edge gateways and edge computing platforms
Design and support telemetry, event streaming, messaging, and data ingestion pipelines from machine-to-edge-to-cloud environments.
Evaluate connectivity architectures for reliability, scalability, security, performance, and operational efficiency.
Lead troubleshooting and root cause analysis for complex connectivity, networking, software, and data pipeline issues.
Collaborate with Product Managers, Architects, Cybersecurity, Cloud Engineering, and Data Engineering teams to ensure successful solution delivery.
Establish engineering standards, implementation patterns, testing strategies, and operational best practices.
Participate in architecture reviews and technical design decisions for enterprise connectivity platforms.
Evaluate emerging technologies and provide recommendations that improve platform capabilities and customer value.
Mentor engineers and contribute technical leadership across multiple teams and projects.
Drive continuous improvement in system observability, reliability, performance, and operational supportability.

Considered a Top Candidate:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications, or related technical field.
10+ years of experience in Software Engineering, Connectivity Engineering, Networking, Distributed Systems, Cloud Platforms, or Industrial IoT.
Advanced experience developing software using: Python, C, C++, C#
Experience designing and supporting connected products and telematics platforms.
Experience with:
Starlink and satellite communications
LTE, LTE-M, NB-IoT, and 5G technologies
Private LTE and Private 5G environments
IoT and edge computing platforms
MQTT, Kafka, AMQP, REST APIs, and event-driven architectures
TCP/IP networking, VPNs, routing, DNS, and network diagnostics
Experience building and supporting machine telemetry and cloud-based data pipelines.
Experience working with Azure, AWS, or cloud-native distributed systems.
Experience leading architecture discussions, technical design reviews, and complex engineering initiatives.
Familiarity with autonomous systems, connected equipment, fleet management, mining, construction, or industrial automation solutions.
Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and influence technical direction across organizations.

Summary Pay Range:
$112,710.00 - $183,140.00
