Position Summary
The Senior Electrical Engineer provides technical leadership and oversight for the planning, coordination, installation, commissioning, and startup of complex electrical systems on mission-critical and data center projects. This role serves as the primary electrical subject matter expert for project teams and clients, ensuring electrical systems meet performance, quality, schedule, budget, and reliability requirements.
The Senior Electrical Engineer collaborates closely with owners, design consultants, subcontractors, commissioning agents, and construction leadership from preconstruction through project turnover.
Key Responsibilities
Preconstruction & Design
- Review and evaluate electrical system designs for constructability, reliability, maintainability, and cost.
- Lead electrical design reviews and coordination meetings.
- Perform technical evaluations of medium-voltage, low-voltage, backup power, and critical power distribution systems.
- Develop conceptual and budgetary electrical estimates.
- Assist in value engineering and lifecycle cost analysis.
- Support procurement strategy and subcontractor selection.
- Review short-circuit, coordination, arc flash, and load studies.
Construction Execution
- Oversee installation of electrical systems including:
- Medium-voltage distribution systems
- Switchgear and switchboards
- Generators
- UPS systems
- PDUs and RPPs
- Transformers
- Busway systems
- Grounding and bonding systems
- Building management and monitoring systems
- Conduct field inspections and quality audits.
- Monitor subcontractor performance and schedule adherence.
- Resolve field conflicts and design issues.
- Review RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, and change requests.
- Verify installation compliance with project specifications and applicable codes.
Data Center / Mission Critical Responsibilities
- Lead electrical coordination for Tier III and Tier IV critical environments.
- Verify redundancy requirements including N+1, 2N, and concurrently maintainable system configurations.
- Review power distribution architecture and electrical system resiliency.
- Participate in integrated systems testing and startup activities.
- Support operational readiness planning and turnover.
- Coordinate interfaces between electrical, mechanical, controls, and commissioning teams.
Commissioning & Startup
- Develop commissioning and turnover strategies.
- Coordinate with third-party commissioning providers.
- Witness equipment startup and performance testing.
- Review pre-functional and functional test procedures.
- Lead electrical troubleshooting during commissioning.
- Verify all systems meet owner project requirements prior to turnover.
- Support black-building, load bank, and integrated systems testing activities.
Leadership
- Mentor M/E Engineers and Project Engineers.
- Provide guidance on best practices, safety, quality, and risk management.
- Serve as the electrical technical lead for project teams.
- Support business development pursuits and client presentations.
- Assist in developing electrical engineering standards and lessons learned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or related field.
- 8 to 15+ years of electrical engineering, construction, commissioning, or mission-critical experience.
- Experience managing large-scale electrical infrastructure projects.
- Strong understanding of:
- Medium-voltage and low-voltage power systems
- Emergency and standby power systems
- Generators and paralleling switchgear
- UPS technologies
- Electrical distribution systems
- Grounding and bonding practices
- Power monitoring and control systems
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
- Understanding of commissioning and startup processes.
- Knowledge of NEC and applicable industry standards.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- PE (Professional Engineer) license.
- Data center, semiconductor, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, or mission-critical experience.
- Experience with hyperscale clients such as:
- Microsoft
- Google
- Meta
- AWS
- Apple
- Knowledge of Uptime Institute Tier standards and mission-critical infrastructure.
- LEED, CDT, PMP, ATD, or similar certifications.
- Experience supporting large-scale data center construction and commissioning programs.
