Job Description

Lead electrical engineering and design for greenfield and brownfield substation projects. Develop and review one-line diagrams, general arrangements, equipment layouts, grounding plans, conduit plans, cable schedules, and AC/DC auxiliary systems. Design and specify high-voltage equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, switches, bus systems, instrument transformers, control enclosures, and station-service equipment. Perform grounding, lightning protection, bus, cable-sizing, battery, voltage-drop, and equipment-rating calculations. Develop or review protection and control deliverables, including schematics, wiring diagrams, relay panels, and control-house layouts. Prepare equipment specifications, bills of materials, engineering estimates, scopes of work, and construction packages. Lead technical coordination between electrical, civil, structural, protection and control, transmission, and project-management teams. Perform design reviews and QA/QC to ensure accuracy and compliance with client requirements. Support equipment procurement by reviewing vendor proposals, drawings, calculations, and technical submittals. Provide engineering support during bidding, construction, testing, energization, and commissioning. Participate in site visits, field investigations, constructability reviews, and existing-condition assessments. Resolve technical issues involving equipment, design interfaces, construction constraints, and brownfield modifications. Manage engineering schedules, budgets, deliverables, risks, and client expectations. Serve as a technical point of contact for utilities, developers, EPC contractors, and external consultants. Mentor junior engineers and designers and support their technical development.

The Successful Applicant

A successful Senior Electrical Engineer - Substation should have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Approximately 7-12+ years of electrical engineering experience, preferably involving utility substations.
  • Professional Engineer license preferred or required, depending on responsibility level.
  • Experience designing substations typically ranging from 34.5 kV through 500 kV.
  • Strong understanding of substation physical design, major electrical equipment, grounding, auxiliary systems, and protection and control interfaces.
  • Experience with greenfield installations, brownfield expansions, equipment replacements, and modernization projects.
  • Knowledge of applicable IEEE, ANSI, NESC, NEC, NFPA, and utility standards.
  • Ability to lead projects and review the work of engineers and designers.
  • Strong communication, technical writing, organization, and client-facing skills.
  • Ability to travel periodically for site visits and project meetings.
