Senior Electrical Engineer — Power Distribution & Plant Electrical Systems
About the role
As a Senior Electrical Engineer at Aalo Atomics, you will own the power distribution and electrical systems for our factory-built power plant — from single-line architecture through raceway design, cable pulling, termination, and commissioning. You will design medium- and low-voltage power distribution schemes, lay out conduit and cable tray routing, size and specify feeders, transformers, switchgear, MCCs, and panelboards, and then build and commission what you designed — all hands-on in our facility. This is a senior technical leadership role responsible for defining how we design, route, terminate, and scale plant electrical systems from prototype modules to production-line builds.
Responsibilities
- Own the full lifecycle of plant power distribution systems: single-line and three-line diagrams, load studies, short-circuit and coordination analysis, arc-flash studies, and protective device settings
- Design conduit routing, cable tray layouts, and raceway systems within factory-assembled plant modules, optimizing for manufacturability, maintenance access, and NEC fill and derating requirements
- Develop cable schedules, pull calculations, and termination plans; oversee conduit installation, cable pulls, and terminations on the factory floor
- Specify, procure, and qualify power distribution equipment — transformers, switchgear, MCCs, panelboards, VFDs, UPS systems, and protective relays — and own the BOM and supplier relationships
- Design and build control panels and marshalling cabinets; terminate instrumentation loops and verify point-to-point wiring
- Develop and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, panel layouts, conduit and raceway drawings, and cable schedules in EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, or equivalent
- Collaborate closely with mechanical, structural, and nuclear engineering teams to integrate power runs and raceways into factory-assembled modules, resolving routing conflicts early in 3D models
- Drive the architecture and build-out of embedded hardware and firmware capabilities for plant I&C, defining the path from off-the-shelf components toward proprietary embedded systems
- Design and build control systems for reactor and balance-of-plant components, including sensors, actuators, signal conditioning, and PLCs/DCS hardware
- Mentor junior electrical engineers and technicians; set technical standards and workmanship criteria for the electrical team
- Question requirements
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
- 3+ years of hands-on experience designing and building industrial power distribution systems, conduit and raceway installations, and control panels — not just simulating or specifying them
- Strong working knowledge of NEC (NFPA 70) as it applies to conductor sizing, conduit fill, voltage drop, derating, grounding, and overcurrent protection
- Experience with power system studies: load flow, short-circuit, coordination, and arc-flash analysis (SKM, ETAP, EasyPower, or equivalent)
- Demonstrated experience designing conduit routing and cable tray systems and producing raceway drawings, cable schedules, and pull calculations
- Experience with MV and LV switchgear, transformers, MCCs, panelboards, VFDs, UPS systems, and protective relaying
- Demonstrated experience with embedded hardware and firmware architecture, including custom PCB design, microcontroller selection, real-time firmware, and hardware/software interface definition
- Strong working knowledge of industrial instrumentation: thermocouples, RTDs, pressure transducers, flow meters, level sensors
- Proficiency with electrical design tools (NX Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical, EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, or equivalent) and ability to produce production-ready drawings
- Experience with decentralized I/O architectures (remote I/O modules, distributed power supplies, sensors, and controllers)
- Ability to use industrial network protocols (Modbus, EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP, OPC-UA)
- Experience working with cybersecurity for control systems
- Track record of independently driving electrical hardware through design, build, and commissioning milestones
Preferred Experience
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Texas
- Experience in chemical process, oil & gas, or other high-consequence industries with strict quality and documentation requirements
- Experience designing power distribution and raceway systems for modular or factory-assembled equipment (skid-built plants, modular data centers, offshore modules, or similar)
- Hands-on experience building and commissioning first-of-kind electrical systems in a fast-moving R&D or startup environment
- Familiarity with IEEE, ISA, NEC, and/or nuclear I&C standards (IEEE 603, IEEE 141/142 "Red/Green Book" series, ISA-84, etc.)
- Experience with NFPA 79 for industrial machinery electrical safety
- Experience owning production schedules and driving hardware through manufacturing milestones; scaling electrical systems from prototype to repeatable production builds
- Ability to use electrical test equipment including multimeters, meggars, oscilloscopes, data loggers, Hipot testers, and LCR meters
- Hands-on experience designing, shielding, and testing electronics for EMI/EMC compliance and/or operation in radiation, high-temperature, or otherwise harsh environments
- Prior experience in a vertically integrated hardware company where engineers build what they design
- Experience working with AI for writing code and documentation
Physical Requirements:
- Comfortable working on the factory floor alongside technicians and welders
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and stand for extended periods
- Physical dexterity required for crouching, kneeling, and working in varied positions
- Ability to focus and operate effectively in a loud, hot factory environment
Requirements
Must be based in the United States
Must be willing to work on-site at our headquarters in Austin, Texas
