    Senior Distribution Engineer

    Contract-to-Hire Opportunity | Albuquerque, NM

    Position Overview

    We are seeking a Senior Distribution Engineer for a contract-to-hire opportunity in Albuquerque, NM. This position will lead engineering and design project teams responsible for developing high-quality electrical distribution designs for new construction, system alterations, and redevelopment projects involving 2.4kV to 34.5kV overhead and underground utility distribution systems.

    The Senior Distribution Engineer will provide technical leadership throughout the design and construction process, working closely with engineers, designers, clients, contractors, and other project stakeholders to deliver safe, reliable, cost-effective solutions.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Lead design project teams for overhead and underground electrical distribution projects ranging from 2.4kV to 34.5kV.
    • Lead the development of distribution voltage design packages, including:
      • Distribution equipment installation
      • Feeder replacement
      • Cable replacement
      • New feeder design
      • Overhead and underground distribution systems
    • Lead project teams throughout the design and construction process while adapting designs to meet budget, schedule, design, and client requirements.
    • Review and perform distribution engineering calculations, including:
      • Cable pulling calculations
      • Voltage drop calculations
      • Pole loading calculations
      • Other applicable distribution system calculations
    • Apply strong knowledge of NESC standards and utility standards, guides, specifications, and procedures.
    • Participate in the development of project scope, schedules, budgets, resource forecasts, and construction plans.
    • Manage and support the effective execution of change orders.
    • Apply engineering knowledge and experience to complex projects and develop non-standard design solutions when necessary.
    • Oversee or perform quality control reviews of engineering documents, drawings, specifications, and other project deliverables.
    • Oversee or perform construction administration activities.
    • Lead field inspections of overhead and underground electric facilities on public and private utility systems.
    • Prepare and present technical reports and other engineering documentation for clients and industry publications.
    • Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing clients, customers, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
    • Identify and pursue new business development opportunities.
    • Participate in sales and marketing efforts and identify key project pursuits.
    • Lead the preparation of cost proposals, qualification statements, and other business development materials in support of financial and performance objectives.
    • Provide technical leadership, guidance, and mentoring to less experienced engineers and designers.
    • Ensure adherence to established QA/QC processes and procedures.
    • Coordinate effective communication regarding vegetation management, third-party attachments, right-of-way, easements, permitting, and outage planning.
    • Ensure compliance with company and project site safety policies and procedures.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
    • Comply with all applicable company policies, standards, and procedures.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited program AND a minimum of 7 years of distribution engineering experience.
    • OR
    • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination, AND a minimum of 7 years of distribution engineering experience.
    • OR
    • Master's degree in Engineering AND a minimum of 6 years of distribution engineering experience.
    • EPC project experience is strongly preferred.
    • Internship experience does not count toward the required years of professional experience.
    • Engineering degree must be from an ABET-accredited program — this requirement is non-negotiable.
    • Expert knowledge of electrical distribution power flow.
    • Strong knowledge of overhead and underground construction methods and electrical distribution system equipment.
    • Experience with distribution design software and GIS applications used to support engineering and design.
    • Expert knowledge of easements, right-of-way requirements, and permitting associated with distribution projects.
    • Experience leading the design and execution of large-scale distribution projects.
    • Ability to delegate work assignments and effectively coordinate the efforts of engineers and designers.
    • Ability to identify, evaluate, and resolve technical issues in a team environment.
    • Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and quantitative problem-solving skills.
    • Strong attention to detail, organization, collaboration, facilitation, and team-building skills.
    • Ability to perform quality reviews of detailed engineering documents, drawings, and specifications.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and other engineering-related software.
    • Ability and willingness to travel as required.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
    • Experience with utility distribution engineering within an EPC environment.
    • Experience working directly with electric utilities, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
    • Experience with complex overhead and underground distribution projects.
