The Senior Director Finance will serve as the finance leader for the Optum Financial Commercial business, with responsibility for financial planning and analysis, forecasting, performance management, and strategic decision support. This role will partner closely with Commercial leadership to manage the financial performance of the business, provide insight into key business drivers, and support achievement of financial objectives, operating commitments, and long-range strategic priorities.

For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead, develop, and support the finance team supporting Commercial, setting clear priorities, establishing effective operating routines, and fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
  • Serve as the primary finance business partner to Commercial leadership, providing financial guidance across revenue, margin, operating expense, capital investment, earnings, cash flow, and long-range planning
  • Manage the Commercial financial planning and performance management process, including monthly results, quarterly forecasts, annual operating plans, long-range financial plans, and executive business reviews
  • Analyze business drivers, operational metrics, pricing dynamics, client trends, payer and provider activity, and market conditions to identify financial insights, risks, opportunities, and recommended actions
  • Partner with Commercial, product, operations, strategy, sales, controllership, treasury, Optum Bank, and enterprise finance teams to align financial plans with business strategy and ensure disciplined execution against commitments
  • Improve forecast accuracy, performance transparency, and proactive identification of risks and opportunities through effective financial analysis, operating discipline, and action-oriented recommendations
  • Lead financial evaluation of strategic initiatives, pricing decisions, client opportunities, partnerships, capital investments, new products, and potential M&A activity impacting the Commercial business
  • Oversee month-end close partnership, financial controls, variance analysis, and executive reporting to ensure accurate, timely, and meaningful communication of business performance
  • Develop executive-ready reporting, financial narratives, dashboards, and presentation materials that clearly communicate Commercial financial performance, business drivers, risks, opportunities, and recommended actions
  • Champion process improvement, automation, simplification, and scalable finance practices that strengthen planning discipline, decision quality, and team effectiveness

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Economics, or related field
  • 10+ years of progressive finance, FP&A, corporate finance, accounting, or related experience
  • 5+ years of leadership experience, including direct or matrixed team leadership and development of high-performing finance talent
  • Experience managing a full P&L or large, complex financial portfolio, including revenue, expense, earnings, forecasting, and strategic investment decisions
  • Knowledge of GAAP, financial controls, accounting close processes, and enterprise finance governance
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint proficiency, with experience developing clear, executive-ready financial materials
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with senior business leaders, influence decisions, and translate financial analysis into actionable business strategy
  • Proven advanced financial modeling, forecasting, business case development, variance analysis, and executive reporting experience
  • Proven ability to manage ambiguity, prioritize competing demands, and deliver high-quality work in a fast-paced, matrixed environment
  • Demonstrated history of handling confidential information in accordance with company policy and industry standards

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field
  • CPA, CMA, CFA, or other relevant finance, accounting, or business certification
  • Healthcare, financial services, payments, banking, or technology-enabled business experience
  • Experience supporting commercial growth businesses, including pricing, product economics, client profitability, and strategic investment decisions
  • Experience with PeopleSoft, Hyperion SmartView, Essbase, Power BI, financial planning systems, or similar reporting and analytics tools
  • Proven excellent executive communication skills, including the ability to simplify complex topics, develop compelling financial narratives, and present recommendations to senior leaders
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively across a matrixed enterprise and build trusted relationships with business, finance, controllership, operations, strategy, product, and shared service partners

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $159,300 - $273,200 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
