Senior Civil/Structural Designer

Location: Charlotte, NC
Job Type: Contract-to-Potential Hire

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Civil/Structural Designer to join their team in Charlotte, NC. This is an excellent opportunity for a highly skilled design professional with extensive experience in civil and structural design, drawing and model checking, QA/QC, and design verification. In this role, you will play a critical part in ensuring the quality, accuracy, and constructability of engineering deliverables while supporting complex industrial and infrastructure projects.

This position combines advanced design responsibilities with primary accountability as a designated drawing and model checker. You will review and verify 2D drawings and 3D models—including civil, structural steel, concrete, and architectural elements—to ensure compliance with project requirements, applicable codes, and company quality standards. As project needs arise, you will also contribute directly to the development of models and drawings while mentoring junior team members and collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the designated checker for civil/structural drawings and 3D models, including civil, concrete, structural steel, and architectural deliverables, prior to project issuance.
  • Perform comprehensive QA/QC reviews to ensure accuracy, completeness, constructability, and consistency of all design deliverables.
  • Verify compliance with applicable codes and standards, including ACI, AISC, IBC, OSHA, client specifications, and internal procedures.
  • Conduct detailed 3D model reviews, including geometry validation, connectivity, clash detection, and interdisciplinary coordination.
  • Review vendor drawings, shop drawings, and construction submittals to ensure alignment with design intent and project requirements.
  • Identify design discrepancies, clashes, and constructability concerns while collaborating with engineering and project teams to resolve issues.
  • Act as the primary QA/QC gatekeeper to ensure all deliverables meet established quality standards before release.
  • Develop and review civil systems, grading and drainage plans, structural steel, reinforced concrete, and architectural designs in both 2D and 3D environments.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level designers by providing technical guidance, quality oversight, and best practices.
  • Coordinate closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to maintain project schedules and deliverables.
  • Support project planning, prioritization, and coordination throughout design and field execution activities.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Drafting, Design, Engineering Technology, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 12+ years of civil/structural design experience, including formal drawing checking or QA/QC responsibilities.
  • Extensive experience performing drawing reviews, design verification, and 3D model validation.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD or MicroStation and Autodesk or Bentley structural design platforms (AVEVA E3D or PDMS experience preferred).
  • Experience using Navisworks, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong knowledge of structural design principles, construction practices, and multidisciplinary coordination.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects while proactively identifying and resolving design issues.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, Drafting, or a related discipline.
  • Previous experience serving as a designated drawing and model checker.
  • Advanced CADD expertise with strong QA/QC leadership experience.
  • Experience supporting multiple concurrent industrial or infrastructure projects in deadline-driven environments.
  • Familiarity with Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) methodologies.
