Location: San Jose, CA or Remote

Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Database Reliability Engineer (DBRE) with strong expertise in PostgreSQL, cloud infrastructure, database administration, Linux systems engineering, and automation. The ideal candidate will combine database engineering and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices to build reliable, scalable, secure, and highly operable data platforms.

Must Have Technical/Functional Skills

5+ years of experience designing, operating, and troubleshooting PostgreSQL in production environments.

Strong experience with AWS, Amazon RDS, PostgreSQL on Kubernetes, Terraform, service discovery, and secrets management.

5+ years of experience managing production databases or distributed data systems across application, database, operating system, storage, and network layers.

3+ years of experience in Linux Systems Engineering, including performance tuning, memory management, I/O tuning, configuration, security, and networking.

Experience automating infrastructure and database operations using Terraform, Ansible, Chef, or Puppet.

2+ years of experience with scripting/programming languages such as Python, Bash, Go, Ruby, or Perl.

Experience working with polyglot data environments and at least one non-PostgreSQL technology such as Kafka/MSK, ClickHouse, Redis, MySQL, Cassandra, or Elasticsearch.

Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL administration, performance, security, backup/recovery, replication, indexing, and query optimization.

Roles & Responsibilities

Plan, administer, maintain, and secure PostgreSQL infrastructure in collaboration with SRE teams.

Design and maintain highly available, scalable, and reliable database platforms.

Build and maintain ETL pipelines for PostgreSQL and develop automation for data migration.

Perform database administration activities including installation, upgrades, patching, backup/recovery, monitoring, and capacity planning.

Support architectural changes and database deployments in cloud environments.

Participate in production on-call rotations, incident response, monitoring, alerting, and post-incident reviews.

Automate database and infrastructure operations to reduce manual effort and operational toil.

Collaborate with application engineering, SRE, security, and infrastructure teams to improve database reliability and performance.

Develop procedures and tooling for safe database migrations and operational changes.

Support disaster recovery, backup validation, failover testing, and reliability improvements.

Analyze database performance and troubleshoot issues across database, OS, storage, network, and application layers.

Create technical documentation and design solutions for production data systems.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience building database platform tooling, self-service workflows, and paved paths for application teams.

Experience operating MSK/Kafka, ClickHouse, or Redis at scale.

Knowledge of cluster operations, replication, partitioning/sharding, retention, capacity planning, and workload tuning.

Experience defining and improving SLOs, disaster recovery plans, backup validation, and failover testing.

Deep knowledge of PostgreSQL internals, including concurrency, transactions, replication, maintenance, backup/recovery, indexing, and query performance.

Experience with Kubernetes-based database platforms and cloud-managed database services.

Strong written and verbal communication skills with experience creating design documents and presenting technical solutions.

Bachelor''s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
