Tetra Tech AMT is looking for a Senior Data Scientist to support a highly visible new FAA project in the initial project standup of executable processes and analytics at the direction of FAA management for pre-departure planning.

Primary job duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Establish a process for strategic deconfliction in collaboration with internal and external aviation stakeholders for a new FAA Traffic Flow Management Evolution Program for a potential "24/7" operation
  • Use advanced statistics, modeling, and machine learning to predict outcomes and solve complex problems related to anticipating flight delays, flight cancellations, scheduling conflicts, and other aircraft/flight disruptions
  • Support tasks that bridge the gap between complex mathematics and business strategy related to how an air traffic management (ATM) system would translate to lower fuel burden, less aircraft downtime, shorter block times, and faster flights
  • Work 40 hours a week but potentially work late night shifts and weekends at times to cover overnight and weekend data modeling needs
  • Document the FAA process, roles, and responsibilities to enable execution of strategic deconfliction process plan for day of operations in the National Airspace System (NAS)
  • Work with FAA and industry vendor(s) who will architect and build the analytical data model and provide feedback as necessary
  • Collaborate with FAA stakeholders and external industry partners (as needed) to obtain necessary data to operate logistically optimized model
  • Enter data into analytical models (long range and same day planning) to develop strategic deconfliction plans
  • As needed, support the training of FAA staff on process execution related to newly designed traffic flow management program
  • Document all lessons learned and FAA process improvement opportunities for evolution of strategic deconfliction processes/capability
  • Apply knowledge in the domain of engineering and operations research to optimize NAS strategic deconfliction plan
  • Define post event analysis criteria and data expectations
  • Document recommended process improvement opportunities
  • Provide expertise in the design, development, implementation, and analysis of technical FAA products and systems

The successful candidate will have:

  • Have a deep background in air traffic management and airport operations including FAA traffic flow management practices
  • Possess broad knowledge of systems engineering and implementation, providing technical expertise in the application of state-of-the-art technology to meet FAA mission and aerospace requirements
  • The ability to move beyond off-the-shelf algorithms by understanding their underlying assumptions and limitations
  • The ability to train predictive models and scale them using cloud ecosystems
  • The patience to clean, process, and extract structure from "messy" aviation, FAA, airline, weather and other related data, which consumes the majority of the project's time
  • Flexible work schedule that may require working at FAA in-person and cover nights, weekends and even some holidays during the year as this is in support of a national and highly visible FAA project
  • Potentially be on call to cover shifts when anticipated higher days of operations or team members are unavailable/on scheduled vacation
  • Must have at least 20 years of professional years of experience supporting projects as a data scientist but preferably in support of the FAA/NASA or at least the federal government
  • Must have a Master's Degree in technical area (e.g. Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science or Engineering) or related field
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is preferred

Salary: $155,000 to $170,000 annually. Compensation is based on relevant experience and qualifications.
