The Company

Our client operates an established, family-run dairy enterprise in the Yorkshire Dales.

The farm is home to approximately 1,300 dairy cows and is recognised for its award-winning pedigree herd. The business maintains a tidy, well-managed and high-welfare farming environment, with animal health and welfare at the heart of its operation.

Our client is now seeking an experienced Senior Calf Rearer / Calf-Rearing Supervisor to join its established team.

The Role

You will take day-to-day responsibility for the calf-rearing unit while working alongside and supervising two established calf-rearing team members.

The farm calves throughout the year, with up to 10 cows calving in a day during busier periods. The successful candidate must therefore be confident managing a busy workload while consistently maintaining high standards.

This role requires someone mature, dependable and practical who can lead the team constructively, communicate well and become a positive part of the wider family business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Taking responsibility for the day-to-day running of the calf-rearing unit.
  • Supervising and supporting two existing calf-rearing team members.
  • Monitoring calf health, welfare, feeding and development.
  • Following established calf-rearing protocols to a consistently high standard.
  • Identifying and responding promptly to any health or welfare concerns.
  • Maintaining accurate records where required.
  • Ensuring calf housing, feeding equipment and working areas remain clean and well organised.
  • Supporting calving cows and newborn calves during busy periods.
  • Working closely with the wider dairy and herd management team.
  • Maintaining the farm's excellent standards of animal welfare, hygiene and biosecurity.

The Candidate

The successful candidate will:

  • Have proven practical experience in calf rearing and calf husbandry.
  • Be confident working with both calving cows and newborn calves.
  • Have previous supervisory experience or the maturity and ability to lead a small team.
  • Manage colleagues positively and constructively.
  • Demonstrate excellent animal-health and welfare standards.
  • Be reliable, hardworking and well organised.
  • Remain calm and capable during busy calving periods.
  • Have a positive, team-focused attitude.
  • Take genuine pride in their work and working environment.

Attitude and team fit are absolutely essential for this appointment.

Working Hours

  • Five full days per week.
  • Approximately 60 hours per week.
  • Typical working hours of 5:00am-5:00pm.
  • One weekend in every three.
  • Additional milking overtime may be available at £18 per hour.

Salary and Benefits

  • Basic salary of up to £40,000, depending on experience.
  • Good-quality two-bedroom cottage available on the farm.
