Job Description:
Retail Senior Consultant - Business Change Management (Store Operations)
North America | Retail Business Consulting | Tata Consultancy Services
About the Job
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is seeking an experienced Business Change Management professional to join our North America Retail Business Consulting division as a Senior Consultant.
The ideal candidate will combine strong hands-on change management experience with a practical understanding of retail store and field operations. The role will support large-scale retail transformation programs, helping clients translate changes in operating models, processes and enabling technology into sustainable changes for store leaders, field teams and frontline associates.
This is a business and operational change role rather than a technology-focused OCM role. The successful candidate will assess organizational and frontline impacts, engage stakeholders, develop and execute change and adoption plans, support business readiness and capability building, and help embed new processes, behaviors and ways of working across distributed store networks.
Success requires strong structured problem-solving, stakeholder management, facilitation and communication skills, together with the ability to independently lead defined change workstreams within complex transformation programs.
Key Responsibilities
Business Change & Transformation
- Lead defined business change management workstreams within large-scale retail transformation programs, aligned to overall program objectives and business outcomes.
- Conduct stakeholder, organizational and change-impact assessments to understand implications for store associates, store management, field leadership and central support teams.
- Develop and execute practical change plans covering stakeholder engagement, leadership alignment, communications, capability building and training, business readiness, adoption and sustainment.
- Translate transformation designs into clear implications and actions for frontline roles, processes, behaviors and management routines.
- Assess organizational readiness and the capacity of stores and field teams to absorb change, helping determine appropriate sequencing and deployment approaches.
- Identify adoption barriers, operational risks and resistance, and develop practical mitigation actions with client leaders and program teams.
- Define and track readiness and adoption measures, using frontline feedback and operational performance indicators to refine interventions.
- Facilitate workshops, interviews and working sessions with corporate, field and store stakeholders.
- Support pilots, rollout and post-implementation activities to embed new processes and ways of working.
Store Operations Domain
- Apply an understanding of retail store operations to assess how transformation initiatives affect stores, field organizations and frontline associates.
- Support change across areas such as store operating models, workforce and labor processes, task management and execution, standard operating procedures, inventory processes, customer experience, omnichannel fulfillment and technology-enabled store operations.
- Understand the practical challenges of deploying change across large store networks, including different store formats, leadership capability, workforce capacity, competing initiatives and operational peak periods.
- Work effectively with Store Operations, Field Leadership, HR, Learning & Development, Merchandising, Supply Chain, Technology and other functions.
- Help ensure transformation solutions are practical, executable and sustainable at store level and are designed around business outcomes rather than solely around technology deployment.
- Bring relevant outside-in perspectives and leading practices from retail and other large distributed operating environments.
Client Engagement & Business Development
- Build strong client relationships, primarily engaging with Director, Senior Manager and workstream-level stakeholders, with appropriate interaction with senior executives.
- Serve as a trusted advisor on frontline change, operational readiness, adoption and implementation within assigned workstreams.
- Communicate effectively with audiences ranging from corporate leaders to field and store management.
- Support proposals and business development by contributing change approaches, implementation plans, insights and content.
- Contribute to the development of Retail Business Consulting propositions, methodologies, points of view and reusable assets.
Practice & Team Leadership
- Mentor junior team members and provide guidance on change-management approaches and deliverables.
- Contribute to developing TCS's business change management capability within Retail Business Consulting.
- Support recruiting, coaching and professional development activities as required.
- Champion high standards of consulting quality, collaboration and continuous improvement.
Operational Excellence
- Deliver assigned workstreams to a high standard of quality and client satisfaction.
- Maintain effective governance across change plans, milestones, dependencies, risks and issues.
- Collaborate closely with program leadership and other business, consulting and technology workstreams.
- Produce clear, structured and executive-quality deliverables and recommendations.
- Ensure recommendations balance transformation ambition with the operational realities of a large distributed store network.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in business, organizational change, retail, operations or a related discipline preferred; advanced degree is a plus.
- Approximately 6-8+ years of relevant professional experience across management consulting, retail transformation, store operations, business change management or related roles.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience delivering change management within significant business transformation programs.
- Experience across key change disciplines including change-impact assessment, stakeholder engagement, change planning, communications, capability building and training, business readiness, adoption and sustainment.
- Strong understanding of how transformation affects operating processes, roles, behaviors, management routines and frontline execution.
- Meaningful experience working within retail or serving retail clients; experience within a l arge, multi-site or distributed retail organization is strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of store and field operations and the practical challenges associated with implementing change across large frontline workforces.
- Experience across store operating models, workforce and labor processes, task execution, inventory, customer experience, omnichannel fulfillment or store technology-enabled transformation is desirable.
- Proven ability to independently lead defined workstreams and deliver high-quality outputs within complex programs.
- Strong workshop facilitation, stakeholder management, written communication and presentation skills.
- Strong structured problem-solving capabilities and the ability to translate transformation objectives into practical implementation actions.
- Ability to work effectively across business and technology teams while maintaining a strong focus on business outcomes and frontline adoption.
- Prosci, ACMP or comparable change-management certification is desirable but not required.
- Grocery, mass retail or other high-volume retail experience is a plus.
- Willingness to travel as required.
