Senior Business Analyst Market Data & Surveillance Platforms
Engagement: 6-month contract
Location: Remote
Experience: 8+ years
About the Role
Our client, a leading financial regulatory organization, needs a Senior Business Analyst to support large-scale data platforms that ingest, curate and analyze securities trading data. You will connect market oversight stakeholders with engineering teams, turning ambiguous oversight needs into clear, testable requirements for data pipelines, quality controls and analytics.
Key Responsibilities
- Translate vague business requests (e.g., "flag suspicious trading activity") into structured requirements, user stories and measurable acceptance criteria.
- Document and validate ETL/ELT pipelines end to end: source systems, transformation rules, load logic and downstream consumers.
- Write user stories and acceptance criteria for data pipeline changes, including schema changes, new feeds and reprocessing.
- Define and monitor data quality rules for completeness, accuracy, timeliness and consistency, with thresholds and escalation paths.
- Maintain data lineage and traceability documentation so every output can be traced back to its source records.
- Define handling for late, missing, duplicate, corrected and cancelled records, including reprocessing and audit needs.
- Partner with data engineers, QA and analytics teams on data platform choices (data lake vs. data warehouse, file formats, partitioning).
- Plan and support UAT and data validation, and design test scenarios for pipeline and rule changes.
- Manage stakeholder expectations and scope through prioritization, impact analysis and change control.
- Use analysis to influence decisions, presenting findings, trade-offs and recommendations to senior stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- 8+ years as a Business Analyst or Data Analyst on data-intensive projects, with significant exposure to data engineering or data platform programs.
- Hands-on experience documenting or testing ETL pipelines, plus strong SQL for profiling, reconciliation and validation.
- Solid grasp of data lake and data warehouse architectures, and of storage formats such as Parquet and CSV (columnar vs. row-based, schema evolution, compression, query performance).
- Working knowledge of data quality, governance and lineage, and why they matter in a regulated environment.
- Strong requirements craft: user stories, acceptance criteria, process and data flow modeling, and traceability.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management, including experience handling shifting scope.
- Cloud data platform familiarity (e.g., AWS) and tools such as Jira and Confluence.
Preferred Qualifications
- Capital markets domain knowledge: the lifecycle of an order and a trade (entry, routing, execution, allocation, clearing, settlement), including amendments and cancellations.
- Familiarity with how regulators use trade and order data, and with common manipulation patterns such as spoofing, layering, wash trades and front-running.
- Understanding of why timestamp precision and clock synchronization matter in market data (event sequencing, order book reconstruction, cross-venue analysis).
- Experience with data catalog or lineage tools, and with surveillance or compliance analytics.
- Exposure to Agile delivery.
