    Job Summary:

    The Senior Authorization Specialist performs administrative duties based on the operational needs of the department. Serves as a role model, mentor and preceptor for new and existing staff. Assists and supports the management team with daily operations related to staffing, workload and resource management. Focus on insurance authorizations for outpatient and observation patients, including plan of care completion and communication with Finance, patients and therapists regarding any authorization changes or challenges. Models effective communication and promotes cooperative behaviors. Drives customer service, patient experience, assists with monthly reporting and provider templates. The Senior Authorization Specialist exemplifies the Upstate mission, vision, and values and acts in accordance with Upstate policies and procedures.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Associate degree and three (3) years of relevant patient financial/insurance services experience (preferably in a healthcare setting) or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

    Working knowledge of medical terminology, medical billing/insurance requirements, familiarity with medical coding, and excellent written/oral communication skills required. Computer skills and keyboarding are necessary. Ability to maintain good public relations with patients, visitors, co-workers, and other individuals.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    PM&R experience preferred.
