POSITION OVERVIEW
We are seeking an experienced Senior Accountant / Financial & Tax Advisor to manage the company's bookkeeping, accounting, financial reporting, tax coordination, compliance, and financial advisory needs across operations in Texas and California.
This is a hands-on senior accounting role. The selected candidate will maintain accurate financial records while serving as a trusted financial and tax resource to management.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Accounting & Bookkeeping
• Maintain complete and accurate company books and general ledger.
• Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable.
• Perform bank, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations.
• Prepare journal entries, accruals, prepaid expenses, depreciation, and month-end adjustments.
• Maintain the chart of accounts and properly classify transactions.
• Track assets, liabilities, expenses, revenue, and intercompany transactions.
• Support payroll accounting and payroll reconciliations.
• Maintain organized supporting documentation and financial records.
• Lead or oversee monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes.
Financial Reporting & Management Support
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements: P&L, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow Statement.
• Prepare management reports, financial schedules, and supporting analyses.
• Monitor cash flow, expenditures, revenue, margins, and financial performance.
• Assist with budgets, forecasts, and financial planning.
• Conduct budget-to-actual and period-over-period variance analyses.
• Identify discrepancies, risks, unusual transactions, and control weaknesses.
• Provide management with financial insights and recommendations.
• Support financial modeling and analysis for business decisions, investments, contracts, and capital expenditures.
Texas & California Tax and Compliance
• Maintain working knowledge of applicable Texas and California accounting, taxation, payroll, and business compliance requirements.
• Support or oversee federal, state, and local tax filings.
• Coordinate compliance requirements for operations in Texas and California.
• Support Texas franchise tax and other applicable state reporting obligations.
• Support California income/franchise tax, payroll, sales and use tax, and other applicable reporting.
• Advise management regarding tax planning, estimated payments, compliance deadlines, and potential tax exposure.
• Monitor regulatory and tax changes.
• Coordinate with external CPAs, tax attorneys, auditors, payroll providers, and other advisors.
• Maintain documentation supporting tax filings, positions, deductions, and financial transactions.
Financial Controls & Compliance
• Establish, maintain, and improve accounting procedures and internal financial controls.
• Ensure transactions follow company approval and authorization procedures.
• Maintain accurate audit trails and supporting documentation.
• Review accounting workflows and recommend process improvements.
• Support audits, tax reviews, due diligence, banking requirements, lender requests, and financial examinations.
• Help ensure accounting practices are consistent with U.S. GAAP and applicable requirements.
Financial & Tax Advisory
• Serve as a financial advisor to company leadership.
• Provide practical recommendations regarding tax planning, cash-flow management, expense management, budgeting, forecasting, financial controls, business structuring, financial risk, and capital expenditures.
• Identify potential tax, accounting, or financial risks before they become material issues.
• Translate financial information into clear recommendations for executives and non-financial stakeholders.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related discipline.
• Minimum 8 years of progressive professional accounting, financial reporting, bookkeeping, and/or tax experience.
• Professional experience supporting businesses operating in both Texas and California.
• Strong practical knowledge of Texas and California state tax and business compliance requirements.
• Strong knowledge of U.S. federal taxation and U.S. GAAP.
• Extensive general ledger, reconciliation, financial statement, and month-end/year-end close experience.
• Corporate tax planning and compliance experience.
• Strong understanding of payroll-related accounting and state reporting.
• Experience working directly with owners, executives, CFOs, or senior management.
• Ability to independently manage accounting responsibilities with minimal supervision.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Active CPA license.
• CPA licensed or experienced with Texas and/or California entities.
• 10+ years of progressive accounting or financial management experience.
• Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or related field.
• Multi-company, multi-entity, or intercompany accounting experience.
• Industrial, manufacturing, infrastructure, construction, energy, or project-based business experience.
• Experience coordinating with auditors, CPAs, tax counsel, banks, lenders, and financial institutions.
TECHNICAL SKILLS
• Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Enterprise, NetSuite, Sage, Xero, or comparable systems.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency.
• Ability to prepare reconciliations, financial schedules, financial models, forecasts, and management reports.
• Familiarity with payroll, expense management, banking, tax reporting, and document management systems.
• Multi-entity accounting and intercompany reconciliation experience preferred.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The successful candidate will combine the discipline of an experienced accountant with the judgment of a financial advisor. This person must be comfortable handling detailed accounting and bookkeeping responsibilities while advising management on taxation, cash flow, financial controls, compliance, and business decisions.
