Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

Performs a wide range of routine to complex medical laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Performs clinical testing in one or more areas of the Hospital's lab: hematology, chemistry, blood bank, urinalysis, serology, and/or coagulation.

Essential Duties:

  • Performs a wide range of routine to complex medical laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analyses to determine presence of normal and/or abnormal components; notifies appropriate medical staff of values that are deemed critical to patient's health or treatment; recommends additional tests as appropriate.
  • Collects specimens from patients and processes specimens for testing or storage in accordance with established procedures.
  • Validates, calculates, and tabulates results of tests performed, posts findings to log books and quality control records, and makes reports of observations.
  • Performs quality control to ensure proper functioning of instruments, reagents, and procedures.
  • Assists medical staff in the interpretation of test results and with the selection of additional tests as appropriate; responds to questions and concerns relating to clinical testing protocol, procedures, and results.
  • Works cooperatively and maintains communication with other departments and pathologist to facilitate quality patient care, resolve problems and exchange information.
  • Researches and investigates problems with clinical laboratory procedures, and makes or recommends modifications and corrections as appropriate.
  • Assists in maintaining work areas; cleans equipment/instruments, restocks supplies, and orders supplies as necessary.
  • Attends staff meetings and in-service programs.
  • Provides guidance and training to Phlebotomists.
  • Functions as the medical technologist in-charge as directed.
  • Supports and serves as a role model for our mission, vision, values, and customer service initiatives.
  • Adheres to the organization's policies & procedures, and compliance guidelines
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Work Experience • Related hospital laboratory experience preferred. Education • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related science field. • ASCP registry, or equivalent required within 1 year of eligibility. Must be eligible within 5 years of hire. Specialized Knowledge and Skills • Knowledge and understanding of a wide range of clinical laboratory tests and analyses • Knowledge of accrediting and regulatory standards and hospital policies related to the provision of laboratory services including HIPAA confidentiality and JCAHO mandates • Written and computer skills necessary to prepare required documentation • Interpersonal skills necessary to provide courteous and accurate information to other departments, medical staff, patients, and their families • Ability to read, speak, write and understand the English language clearly • Analytical ability to perform a wide range of clinical laboratory tests and chemical analyses on biological samples and identify normal and abnormal values • Ability to provide technical guidance and instruction to lower level professional staff within area of expertise. • Mental ability to adapt and respond to multiple priorities and demands, meet ongoing deadlines, and work on tasks requiring accuracy and attention to detail • Physical ability to stand for prolonged periods of time, lift/move items weighing up to 50 pounds, and properly utilize required laboratory equipment/tools • Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job.

This position is a full-time 7 on 7 off, nights.
