Seasonal Truck Driver

Exempt/Non-Exempt Non-Exempt Full-Time/Part-Time Seasonal Position Truck Driver Description

The City of Saco is looking for a Seasonal Truck Driver to join our team at the Public Works Department from November through April. This individual is responsible for assisting with construction labor, equipment operation, winter snow and ice duties, and truck driving. Candidates must reside within a location that allows for a response time of forty-five (45) minutes or less following proper notification. This is a condition of employment for all non-facility division roles.

Salary ranges from $26.01/hr - $27.06/hr

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operates a variety of equipment such as automobiles, pick-up trucks, dump trucks, medium-rated loaders, and similarly rated vehicles or equipment.
  • Hauls merchandise, equipment, and supplies as directed.
  • Performs semi-skilled labor associated with Public Works maintenance and construction activities.
  • Maintains all operating equipment in good working condition.
  • May operate trucks, plows, and snow blowers during snow and ice removal.
  • Requires overtime, both scheduled and unscheduled.
  • Makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Services specialized equipment by adjusting belts, oiling, and greasing as needed.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
  • May work with a group of employees on special maintenance or construction projects.

Position Requirements

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of the operation, use, and maintenance of the equipment to which is assigned.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary in the operations of heavy equipment, along with delegating such compliance.
  • Considerable knowledge of highway repair, maintenance methods and equipment operations.
  • Skill in operation of Public Works maintenance equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of highway repair, maintenance methods and equipment operations.
  • Ability to take initiative in routine maintenance matters.
  • Must be able to keep detailed records.
  • Ability to understand, and carry out, written and oral instructions.
  • Must possess a valid Class C Driver's license, Class B CDL license preferred (preference will be given to applicants with a valid Class B CDL license)
  • Ability to operate all equipment safely around obstructions and personnel.
  • Must be able to work well with others and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, officials and the public

Education and Experience:

  • Applicant must possess a high school diploma or equivalent from a standard four-year high school or trade school. Must have six months experience in construction or equipment operations, or any other equivalent combination of experience and training.

Tools and Equipment Used:

Candidate must be able to use hand tools and a variety of motorized equipment and vehicles.

Physical Demands:

  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
  • This position requires full range of body motion, to include bending at waist and full use of all extremities and back muscles.
  • Must posess fine motor dexterity in both hands.
  • Requires excellent levels of equilibrium when positioned on slippery, wet, or erratically moving surfaces.
  • Must possess accurate depth perception, as well as near/far vision of 20/40, corrected or uncorrected, with the ability to distinguish colors.

Work Environment:

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high levels of noise. Some instances require working in noisy environments and include, but are not limited to, on roadways, in equipment and on construction sites.
  • Employee is often required to work in inclement weather conditions, such as winter for snow removal.
