Position Overview

Salary: $18.00/hour DOE

Work Schedule: Multiple schedules are available, including Wednesday through Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and Monday through Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Position Summary:

Under general supervision, to perform a variety of duties involved in providing care for impounded animals and maintaining the cleanliness of the kennel areas.

May exercise technical and functional oversight of animal shelter volunteers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Feed, water, groom and attend to needs of impounded animals; observe animals; monitor health condition of animals; report illness and injuries; restrain animals for treatment; determine adoptability of animals.
  • Maintain and clean kennels, shelter and yard areas, ensure equipment is sanitized, and perform routine housekeeping tasks.
  • Disinfect cages, floors and related kennel areas; treat drains with sulfuric acid; inspect, clean, and disinfect euthanasia room.
  • Assist public by providing information on redeeming impounded animals; assist with adoptions and locating lost and found animals.
  • Maintain and order animal food and cleaning supplies.
  • Answer telephone and assist with office duties.
  • Explain animal control ordinances.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
  • General principles of animal behavior, care, and nutrition.
  • Methods and techniques of animal handling.
  • Practices, methods, equipment, and materials used in cleaning.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices related to kennel cleaning and the care of animals.
  • Principles of purchasing and inventory control.
  • Principles and practices used in dealing with the public.
  • Operate cleaning equipment used in kennel maintenance.
  • Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and cash register.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
  • Exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish, maintain and foster positive working relationships with the Public.
  • Some experience in working with animals is desirable.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 80 lbs.; exposure to cold, heat, noise, odors, outdoors, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, vicious animals, and disease; ability to travel to different sites and locations; availability for shift work.
