The Opportunity:

The PIC Helper supports the Person in Charge (PIC) in the safe, efficient, and compliant execution of marine fuel transfer operations. The PIC Helper is responsible for providing hands-on operational assistance before, during, and after bunker fuel deliveries, including equipment setup, hose handling, connections, securing transfer areas, and other physically demanding tasks associated with marine fueling operations.

The PIC Helper works under the direction of the assigned PIC and assists with coordination among vessel personnel, drivers, terminal representatives, dock personnel, and internal operations teams. This position plays an important role in maintaining safe work practices, operational readiness, and efficient execution of marine fuel transfers.

The PIC Helper may serve as a development pathway for employees seeking to gain experience and knowledge necessary to advance into a Person in Charge (PIC) role.

Responsibilities:

• Assist the PIC with the setup and preparation of marine fuel transfer operations.
• Arrive at the vessel or designated fueling location as directed to assist with pre-transfer preparations.
• Assist with positioning and staging bunker fuel trucks and related equipment.
• Handle, move, connect, disconnect, and secure fuel transfer hoses and associated equipment.
• Assist with connecting hoses, fittings, valves, grounding equipment, and other transfer equipment under the direction of the PIC.
• Assist with the deployment and positioning of spill containment equipment and other required safety equipment.
• Perform inspections of hoses, fittings, connections, containment equipment, trucks, and related equipment and report any concerns to the PIC.
• Assist the PIC with preparing the fueling area prior to the start of fuel transfer operations.
• Support safe access to docks, vessels, terminals, and fueling areas.
• Assist drivers and vessel personnel with operational activities as directed by the PIC.
• Maintain communication with the PIC and immediately report changes in operating conditions, equipment concerns, leaks, spills, or unsafe conditions.
• Assist with monitoring hoses, connections, equipment, and the fueling area throughout the transfer operation.
• Remain alert to potential hazards and maintain a safe work area throughout the operation.
• Assist with emergency response activities as directed by the PIC and established company procedures.
• Assist with spill response and containment activities when required.
• Assist with equipment breakdown and removal following completion of the fuel transfer.
• Disconnect, drain, secure, and properly store hoses and related equipment as directed.
• Assist with cleaning and securing the transfer area after completion of the operation.
• Assist with maintaining accurate operational documentation and paperwork as directed by the PIC.
• Report damaged, defective, or missing equipment to the PIC or appropriate supervisor.
• Maintain proper housekeeping around trucks, docks, vessels, terminals, and equipment.
• Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Follow instructions from the PIC and communicate effectively with vessel personnel, drivers, terminal representatives, dock personnel, and internal teams.
• Perform other operational duties related to marine fuel transfers as assigned.

Safety and Compliance:

• Follow all applicable company policies and procedures governing marine fueling operations.
• Support the PIC in maintaining compliance with applicable United States Coast Guard (USCG), federal, state, local, port authority, environmental, and company requirements.
• Immediately report unsafe conditions, spills, leaks, equipment failures, injuries, or other incidents to the PIC.
• Use always required personal protective equipment (PPE) while performing assigned duties.
• Participate in pre-transfer safety meetings and follow instructions provided by the PIC.
• Do not perform tasks outside of the employee''s training, qualifications, or authorization.
• Maintain awareness of the hazards associated with petroleum products, marine operations, heavy equipment, hoses, pressurized systems, and vessel access.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, rain, wind, and other environmental conditions.
• Ability to climb ladders and safely access docks, vessels, terminals, and other marine facilities.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to handle and maneuver heavy fuel transfer hoses and related equipment.
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during fueling operations.
• Ability to bend, kneel, squat, climb, reach, and perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods.
• Ability to work safely around fuel trucks, marine vessels, loading equipment, hoses, pumps, and other petroleum handling equipment.
• Ability to wear required PPE, including flame-resistant clothing, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and life jackets as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• TWIC required where applicable to assigned marine facilities.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
• Strong communication and situational awareness skills.
• Ability to work safely in a physically demanding and fast-paced environment.
• Must be willing and able to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and extended hours based on operational needs.
• Ability to successfully complete required pre-employment screenings and maintain compliance with company policies.
• Bilingual skills are preferred but not required.

PIC Development:

The PIC Helper position may provide employees with an opportunity to develop the operational knowledge and experience necessary to pursue future advancement into a Person in Charge (PIC) position.

Role Expectations:

The PIC Helper is an essential member of the marine fueling operation. The position is expected to provide reliable hands-on support to the PIC while maintaining a strong focus on safety, communication, equipment readiness, and operational efficiency.

The PIC Helper must understand that marine fueling operations involve significant safety and environmental risks. Employees are expected to stop and communicate any activity or condition they believe may be unsafe and to work within the limits of their training and authorization.

The PIC Helper supports the PIC and does not replace or assume the responsibilities of the designated Person in Charge.
