Works under the supervision of the Director of Math and Science. Incumbent works under the direction of the science faculty department chair or coordinator.

Supervisory Responsibility

Supervision is not a responsibility of this position. May oversee student employees.

Position Summary

The primary purpose of the Lab Tech is to maintain a safe operating environment in the science lab for faculty and students. To accomplish this, the technician is responsible for security of central supplies and lab equipment; prepares science labs for faculty and students; maintaining inventory and SDS'; orders and receives department supplies; and minor maintenance and repair of science equipment. The technician also assists in annual inventory, oversees and assists student workers in preparing work-stations; and assists in developing equipment needs for Science Department. The Science Lab Technician 1 may need to, from time to time, fill in on other RCC campuses.

Examples of Duties - Essential Functions

Lab Duties

• Maintain safe and accessible classrooms, labs, tools, and technology
• Manages virtual and physical inventory
• Prepare a wide variety of solutions, solvents, reagents and pathogens
• Adhere to and enforce laboratory safety rules and procedures
• Prepare lab and experiments/exercises for classes
• Assist and support instructors and students during lab
• Coordinates student lab workers
• Manages security of laboratory equipment
• Repairs laboratory equipment
• Supporting general operations of the RWC greenhouse

Minimum Qualifications

• Education - An Associate's degree with emphasis in one or more of the science disciplines is required.
• Experience - A minimum of one year experience in a science lab setting. See preferred qualifications.

Only degrees received from an accredited institution will be accepted: accreditation must be recognized by the office of degree authorization, US Department of Education, as required by ORS 348.609. Final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in a scientific or educational laboratory setting is preferred.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (Core Competencies)

• Knowledge - Basic filing and recordkeeping principles of chemicals, lab chemical safety and preparation, broad theoretical and conceptual knowledge of science disciplines and lab procedures, science equipment and terminology, computer applications used for science processes, and hazardous materials disposal and safety are essential to the position.
• Skills - Verbal and written communication skills, computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite products, database applications, proofreading and editing, attention to detail, the efficient allocation of cognitive resources in order to (a) identify and process the relevant elements of an issue/task/dimension and (b) produce the correct answer or appropriate result.
• Abilities - Lift and carry up to 50 pounds, perform well in a laboratory environment with noise and distractions, safely manage laboratory materials and supplies, carry out procedures for materials handling and disposal that are in compliance with state and federal requirements, set up and carry out science lab experiments outside the classroom consistent with the needs of the science department faculty, work within established policy and procedures, organize and prepare orders, deal effectively with a diverse public, faculty, staff, and students., be able to work at various RCC locations.

Other Requirements

• For assignments requiring operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a valid Oregon Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 30-days of employment, and maintenance of an acceptable driving record are required.

• This position functions as an in-person work arrangement, working on-campus with either a set schedule or flexibility depending on operational needs.

Physical Demands

• Manual dexterity and coordination are required for more than half of the daily work period (about 75%) which is spent sitting while operating office equipment such as computers, keyboards, and standard lab equipment. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, bend, kneel, stoop, twist, crouch, climb, balance, see, talk, hear, and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility including the ability to move materials up to 25 lbs. daily, and 25-60 lbs. rarely. This position requires both verbal and written communication abilities.

• While performing the duties of this position, the employee is primarily working indoors in a laboratory/classroom environment, and is exposed to chemicals, fumes, dirt, and potentially exposed to body fluids, pathogens, radioactive, and hazardous materials. The noise level in the work environment is typical of most lab environments with potentially loud equipment, frequent interruptions, and background noises.

Additional Posting Information

This is a Part-time Classified, 19 hour per week (47.5%) position in the Science department. Starting compensation is entry level for Group 4 on the 2026-27 Classified Wage Schedule.
