CAROLINE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS POSITION DESCRIPTION School Security Officer JOB TITLE: School Security Officer LOCATION: Caroline High School IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: School Safety and Compliance Coordinator WORK SCHEDULE: 184 Days - 7.583 Hrs. PAY GRADE: 212 SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: N/A FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Law enforcement and/or military experience preferred. Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent (GED). Must possess a valid VA driver's license. Within 90 days of starting the position, must receive the School Security Officer Certification through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and maintain certification by completing 16 hours of related in-service training every 2 years. Must conform to all requirements pursuant to the Code of Virginia and the Virginia Administrative Code for certification. Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents. Ability to deal courteously and fairly with the general public, school staff, and students. Ability to take direction and plan actions accordingly. Ability to supervise students in unstructured situations. Possession of excellent decision making and problem-solving skills.. JOB GOAL: The School Security Officer will assist with safety and security of the school in serving students and staff by being visible and building relationships. This includes being present throughout the day, at after-school events when needed, and on exterior grounds PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to): Patrol and monitor the school building, grounds, and parking lots to deter, detect, report, and stop violations of the law and/or school board policies or unsafe conditions. Identify safety hazards and report them to appropriate school/division staff. Check exterior doors periodically and secure them if not secure. Notify maintenance of doors malfunctioning and needing repair. Check classroom doors and notify administration of those that are consistently not secure. Intervene in and diffuse conflict situations in common areas, restrooms, and classrooms. Detect, investigate, and report unauthorized or suspicious persons, vehicles, and activities. Collaborate with other school and district personnel, assigned SRO, and representatives of local agencies for the purpose of sharing and gaining information. Assist administrators and staff in crisis and emergency situations, fire drills, and building evacuations, assisting students and staff as needed. Maintain security records, logs, and reports as required. Act as a role model regarding communication, social interaction, dress, etc. for students. Supervise and direct student movement. Establish a good rapport with students, staff, and community members. Work with school administrators to investigate violations of school rules and policies, providing due process to those involved. Assist the administration with student searches. Monitor security cameras and acquire video footage when needed. Attend student conferences as requested by administration. Attend staff meetings as required. Assist with students experiencing tardy/attendance issues as needed. Monitor school assemblies and events during the school day. Participate in daily bus duty. Escort students to and from classrooms and offices as needed. Escort visitors as needed. Supervise athletic events, assist with crowd control, and direct traffic as needed Perform other duties as assigned. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must have the ability to effectively communicate and interact with other staff and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment such as, but not limited to, a personal computer, calculator, and copier. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions will be required. EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Services Personnel.
