    Job Descriptions - RPTA - Program Support Staff - School Safety Officer JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: School Safety Officer (SSO) REPORTS TO: Director of Safety and Security UNIT CLASSIFICATION: Renton Professional Technical Association (RPTA) PRIMARY PURPOSE: The School Safety Officer patrols school property, including school halls and parking lots, and provides advice and response to incidents pertaining to the safety and protection of district students, staff and property. Responsibilities include maintaining logs and reports, performing surveillance, conducting investigations, and enforcing rules and regulations. Individual work schedule may be varied in order to cover scheduled evening activities. Car and good driving record are required. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    1. Responds as appropriate to building situations pertaining to safety and protection of district students, staff and property.
    2. Patrols areas in and around schools as needed. In consultation with administration, calls for assistance from police or fire personnel as appropriate.
    3. Obtains information from students and staff regarding rumors, situations or activities which have occurred or are likely to occur, disruptive to the campus environment; builds relationships to promote communication.
    4. Informs school and district administration of problems on or adjacent to campuses involving students and non-students.
    5. Responds to incidents; diffuses situation as possible; removes and confiscates weapons in conjunction with building administrator and/or police.
    6. Prepares reports describing situations around campuses for use in student discipline and by law enforcement, Child Protective Services and the courts as necessary; maintains a variety of records and logs on computer.
    7. Works with local law enforcement and school district officials to ensure the safety of campuses and individual students; provides information to staff and students concerning property protection and safety measures; maintains positive working relationship with outside agencies, students and staff.
    8. As directed by school administration, may conduct investigations, question suspects, witnesses and victims of crimes; maintains confidential information as appropriate.
    9. Responds to calls by school administration to transport students from school to home.
    10. Works with district administration to respond to bomb threats and coordinate proper response with police and fire personnel.
    11. May deliver trespass letters, BECCA letters and other administrative material as needed.
    12. Monitors bus loading and unloading; monitors student activities and events, such as dances and sporting events.
    13. Maintains regular attendance; adheres to board policy and the mutually bargained leave and attendance terms as stated in the collective bargaining agreement.
    14. Performs related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    15. High school graduation or equivalent.
    16. Previous successful work experience in a similar position preferred or work experience in security or law enforcement dealing on a regular basis with young adults.
    17. One year of work experience as a police officer or security officer preferred.
    18. Training or experience in drug/alcohol abuse awareness, prevention/control preferred.
    19. Experience with, knowledge of or training in gang intervention preferred.
    20. Training or experience working with diverse racial, ethnic and cultural groups required.
    21. Valid Washington State driver's license and good driving record.
    22. Current First aid/CPR/AED certification required.
    23. Cultural Competency; ability to effectively work with diverse populations. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
    24. Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of individuals/groups of all ages, backgrounds and educational levels.
    25. Ability to develop and maintain rapport with students and staff.

    27. Ability to chase, physically control and apprehend suspects.
    28. Knowledge of security and safety practices; procedures, and investigatory techniques.
    29. Skill in monitoring security and safety.
    30. Skill in making effective, quick decisions.
    31. Skill in perceiving possible security and safety breaches and taking appropriate action.
    32. Ability to accurately assess emergency situations and remain calm under pressure.
    33. Ability to operate a two-way radio and related electronic devices.
    34. Ability to accurately document activities and occurrences during patrol.
    35. Ability to communicate security and safety procedures to district staff and students.
    36. Ability to perform CPR and other emergency first aid procedures.
