Position Summary

The School Resource Officer (SRO) serves as a sworn law enforcement officer assigned to Greenwood Community School Corporation to help maintain a safe and secure learning environment. The SRO builds positive relationships with students, staff, and families while serving as a law enforcement officer, educator, and mentor. The SRO works collaboratively with school administrators and local law enforcement to promote school safety, crime prevention, emergency preparedness, and positive student engagement.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe, secure, and orderly learning environment for students, staff, and visitors.
  • Serve as the primary law enforcement presence on assigned school campuses.
  • Develop positive relationships with students, staff, families, and community members through daily interaction and mentorship.
  • Respond to emergencies, criminal incidents, safety concerns, and behavioral situations occurring on school property.
  • Investigate criminal activity occurring on school grounds and coordinate with appropriate law enforcement agencies when necessary.
  • Assist school administrators in developing and implementing school safety plans, emergency response procedures, and crisis management protocols.
  • Participate in school safety drills, emergency preparedness exercises, and threat assessments.
  • Provide classroom presentations and educational programs on topics such as school safety, bullying prevention, internet safety, substance abuse prevention, conflict resolution, and responsible decision-making.
  • Serve as a resource to students, staff, and families regarding legal issues, community resources, and safety concerns.
  • Monitor school grounds, parking lots, and school events to promote a safe environment.
  • Collaborate with counselors, administrators, social workers, and mental health professionals to support student well-being.
  • Prepare reports and maintain accurate documentation related to incidents and investigations.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information in accordance with applicable laws and district policies.
  • Attend required training, professional development, and law enforcement certification programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Safety and Security, Building Principal, or employing law enforcement agency.

Qualifications

  • Current sworn law enforcement officer in good standing with an Indiana law enforcement agency.
  • Certified by the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA).
  • Valid Indiana drivers license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Successful completion of all required background investigations and departmental requirements.
  • Previous experience working with youth, schools, or community policing is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students while maintaining professional law enforcement responsibilities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and law enforcement procedures.
  • Knowledge of school safety practices, crisis response, and emergency management.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students of all ages, parents, school personnel, and community members.
  • Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment during emergencies and stressful situations.
  • Strong problem-solving, de-escalation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with educators, administrators, and community partners.
  • Commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and positive school climate.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to patrol school buildings and grounds for extended periods.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to perform the physical duties required of a sworn law enforcement officer.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
