Fiscal Year Appointment

The School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences (SMNS), part of the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University (ASU), invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar position associated with the US NSF Center for Analysis and Prediction of Pandemic Expansion (APPEX) in areas associated with mathematical and computational models in pandemic science.

These models can be applied in any relevant field: Sociology, Computer Science, Psychology, Game Theory, Immunology, Physics, and/or Ecology.

Yes, any/all of them. We want curious and creative quantitative thinkers who are interested in bridging the barriers among disciplines.

APPEX is a national research center dedicated to advancing understanding of how humans influence the risk that isolated outbreaks become global pandemics, mostly via mathematical and computational modeling. Our Center promotes groundbreaking team science, inclusive excellence, and representation of varied disciplinary perspectives to expand the mathematical and epidemiological workforce.

Postdoctoral researchers at APPEX will be expected to work with multiple working group teams; thus, the position description focuses on the skills and perspectives that will round out a community of scholarship rather than on particular research questions.

The successful applicant will be ready to take a leadership role in team science efforts focused on pandemic research. Responsibilities will be divided between:

  • Participation in 2-4 working groups per year focused on a variety of questions, with individual responsibility for a portion of research efforts to advance team goals.
  • Preparation of research results in publications and presentations.
  • Active participation in the APPEX community, including attending virtual seminars, meeting in-person at conferences, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate student collaborators involved with project teams.

The researcher will also have the option to participate in undergraduate teaching if desired.

At the core of the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences (SMNS) is the opportunity for you to work side-by-side with faculty conducting authentic research in STEM disciplines. We seek to infuse our students and the greater community with the ideals of impact, excellence, and access. We strive to create an inclusive student experience with extensive interdisciplinary opportunities.
