School Nurse PreK-12

Position Title: School Nurse PreK-12

Employment Status: Full-Time 188 Days

Reports To: Director of Pupil Services or Superintendents Designee

FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary:

The School Nurse provides leadership and coordination of school health services to ensure a safe, healthy, and supportive learning environment for all students PreK-12. The School Nurse promotes student wellness, manages acute and chronic health conditions, supports attendance and academic success, and ensures compliance with federal and Ohio laws governing school health services.

The School Nurse serves as the districts primary health services professional and collaborates with administrators, staff, families, medical providers, and community agencies to address student physical, mental, and social-emotional health needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Student Health Services and Clinical Care

• Provide direct nursing services to students in accordance with Ohio Revised Code Chapter 3313 and Chapter 4723. • Assess and manage acute illness, injury, and emergency situations during the school day. • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Health Plans (IHPs) for students with chronic health conditions. • Support students with conditions including but not limited to asthma, diabetes, seizure disorders, severe allergies, cardiac conditions, mental health needs, toileting needs, and medically fragile conditions. • Coordinate and oversee medication administration in compliance with ORC 3313.713 and district policy. • Delegate nursing tasks consistent with Ohio Board of Nursing regulations and provide supervision of delegated personnel. • Maintain and monitor emergency action plans, including EpiPen, Diastat, Glucagon inhalers, and AED protocols. • Participate in crisis response, safety planning, and emergency preparedness efforts.

Compliance and Regulatory Oversight

• Ensure district compliance with Ohio Revised Code ORC 3313.67 Health Services, ORC 4723 Nursing Practice Act, ODEW immunization requirements, communicable disease reporting requirements, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA),FERPA, and applicable HIPAA considerations. • Monitor and report immunization compliance and communicate deficiencies to families in accordance with state requirements. • Participate in IEP and 504 meetings when health-related services or accommodations are required. • Assist in development of health-related components of IEPs and 504 Plans. • Maintain accurate health records in accordance with district policy and state law. • Report suspected child abuse or neglect in accordance with Ohio law.

Health Promotion and Prevention

• Promote wellness initiatives that support healthy lifestyles and reduce barriers to learning. • Provide health education and consultation to students and staff. • Collaborate with administrators to improve attendance by addressing health-related barriers. • Monitor trends in student health and communicable diseases and recommend preventive measures. • Coordinate vision, hearing, and other required health screenings in accordance with Ohio law. • Serve as a resource for mental health awareness and trauma-informed practices.

Collaboration and Communication

• Serve as liaison between families, schools, healthcare providers, and community agencies. • Communicate effectively with parents regarding student health concerns and follow-up care. • Provide training to staff on medication administration, emergency response procedures, bloodborne pathogens, anaphylaxis and allergy management, seizure response, diabetes care, and CPRAED as appropriate. • Participate as a member of building-level and district-level support teams. • Support Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) by addressing health-related barriers to learning.

Program Management

• Maintain inventory and proper storage of medications and medical supplies. • Ensure health clinic areas meet safety and sanitation standards. • Maintain required documentation for Medicaid School Program (MSP) billing when applicable. • Assist with development and review of district health policies and procedures. • Maintain required certifications and professional development in school nursing practice.

Additional Responsibilities

• Serve as a member of the District Student Services Team as assigned. • Provide reports and recommendations to the Director of Pupil Services and Superintendent as requested. • Maintain confidentiality of student and personnel records. • Attend required district and professional meetings. • Perform other duties as assigned consistent with the position.

Qualifications:

• Valid Ohio Registered Nurse (RN) License required. • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. • Ohio School Nurse License if required by assignment. • Minimum of three (3) years nursing experience preferred, pediatric or school nursing experience preferred. • Current CPRAED certification. • Knowledge of Ohio school health laws and medication delegation regulations. • Understanding of IDEA, Section 504, ADA, and MTSS frameworks. • Strong clinical judgment and crisis management skills. • Effective communication and collaboration skills. • Ability to maintain accurate records and meet compliance deadlines.

Working Conditions:

• Frequent interaction with students, staff, and families. • Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids. • Occasional lifting and physical assistance of students as needed. • Occasional evening meetings or district events. • Travel between buildings with district-wide responsibilities.
